Plant trees along fence/upper retaining wall?

I was wondering if there are any trees I can plant along the upper part of my retaining wall where the fence is that won't damage the rock wall or be damaged by it. The depth between the fence and retaining wall ranges from 11'-13'. I was thinking along the lines of small trees just for visual interest since we don't need to block a view or gain shade. This is the Northeast side and gets full sun on the upper portion. I see several Quaking Aspen trees in my neighborhood which I like but concerned about the roots. Oh, I also have clay soil but can amend the tree areas if that would help. I'm located in Zone 6, Spokane Washington.
