Talk me out of painting my fireplace
Comments (153)I understand your angst. I felt the same way before I painted my very very dark brown brick fireplace. I painted the fireplace a little darker than the walls in our FR. Painting the fireplace lightened up the entire room. We went from having a dark, dreary FR to one that was light and bright, and a pleasure to be in. The key to painting a fireplace is the prep. The brick has to be cleaned with TSP (trisodium phosphate. Once all of the dirt is removed, then the brick has to be primed. It will take several coats of paint to cover the brick. Once it is painted the first time, the next time will be easier. I have never regretted the fact that I painted the brick. My husband (who loves brick), agrees with me that the room is much better to be in , and that painting the brick was the right thing to do!...See MoreMy painter is trying to talk me out of using aura...
Comments (15)We painted our bathroom ourselves using Aura matte (regular Aura matte--we missed the kind made specifically for bathrooms by about a month or two). We primed the walls with BIN primer (?), then cut-in and rolled two coats of Aura matte on the ceiling and on the walls. It is not difficult to do, and we used no extenders either. Our bathroom is small, and as soon as we finished cutting in, those parts were dry enough for us to start rolling. There are no demarcation lines at all. The only special care, is watch for drips, as they tend to "set-up" faster than they would using other paints. Also, if/when you need to do touch-ups, use the same texture/nap roller as you used to do the original paint job--the difference in texture on the wall is what you'll notice in the touched-up spots, not the paint itself. It is not difficult to use, it touches-up well, and scrubs clean beautifully, without any loss of paint on the wall (you really can't tell where I've scrubbed)....See MoreTalk me out of ikea(Attest/Metrik) cabinet hardware
Comments (10)You like the way they look? You like the way they feel under your fingers as you open doors and drawers with them? Are they well made? Then why not choose the ones from Ikea? Restoration Hardware is just a name, and fortunately they don't stamp RH on their knobs so everyone will know that's where you bought them, or didn't as the case may be. Morality tale: when my son was 4, he invited the kids from preschool to his birthday party. This was before the days of hiring ponies and bands for little kids' birthday parties. His friends brought him the usual assortment of gifts; among the gifts was one of those little cars that you pull back and they zoom forward. He really loved that car. I asked the mom where she found it (it worked really well), and she was embarrassed because it cost less that $1. Less than $1 or more than $10, it made no difference to a 4 year old. The car worked well and was fun, which is, of course, the point of a birthday present. Moral of the story: love your choice of knobs and pulls for the function and look you want in your new kitchen (which is the point of the merchandise), not for the branding....See MoreQuotes 7 -5 -17
Comments (1)Jean Cocteau, memories of long student debates until morning and umpteen visits to movie theaters in order to watch Orpheus. I think I saw it about 6 times. Didn't we see us as intellectuals, funny now....See Moresuzanne_sl
