Vertical Blinds with Curtain, over sliding glass doors

I have a sliding glass door that I need to apply a window treatment to. The configuration is not standard, in that there is a soffit to the left that limits whatever can pass in that direction. The slider faces outside, to the parking lot (townhouse) and is very hot in the summer.

My idea is to keep it simple. Apply vertical blinds (S shape) and then mount a thermal insulating curtain over this, perhaps using a ceiling mounted track (or wall).

There is an air vent on the ground/middle of the doorway, so I can't use fancy panels or plantation blinds. I know, who designed this place and what were they thinking :)

So that's where I'm stuck and I would appreciate some pointers.

Do you use the doors at all? I would use whatever decorative draperies or other window coverings that would look nice in your room and hang an outdoor shade, remote controlled, to block the sun and/or the view.

I got one of these through Costco and it is very effective at blocking the sun/heat, but filtering the light so the room doesn't look too dark. I can see out in the daytime, but if there was anyone who had a view to that window, they could see in at night (it doesn't block that). But that's what I'd use my indoor draperies for.

Can you do a drapery that pulls all the way to one side on a traverse rod, or that you can pull manually if they are mounted on rings? Like this:

Have you tried to hang a vertical blind or two in front of the window just to see if that floor vent it's going to cause them to rattle continuously?

This is an old thread which I happened to come across in a search to hide vertical blinds in a rental--in my case, over sliding doors. Check with the HOA if you live where there is one because some do not allow the slats to be taken down in order to preserve the symmetry on the outside, especially in "cookie cutter" neighborhoods. Verticals may be dated--but then so are the ideas of many HOA's-- and the fines are very real and can be quite steep. If you rent, you may be charged by the owners for any fees incurred for the violation of some very antiquated and weird rule. And there are some owners who do not want them removed for whatever reason, which can become a hassle when inspection time comes up before rent renewal.

really assess your needs before you decide. do you want some shading from the sun without being in the dark? don't do drapes. do you want some privacy from your side neighbor but dont want to sit in the dark? don't do drapes. do you want some privacy or sun shade but still have the slider open for air flow? then don't do drapes. drapes look great, but they are either opened or closed. within the glass blinds are only functional when the door is closed. rolling lovered panels are really good for airflow without blinds blowing around. verticals cant be beat for side to side privacy.

For a transitional style room with sliding doors I'd do floor length curtain panels on each side, hung on a rod located half way between the door molding and the ceiling.

Yes, I didn't mention that before this had a fabric-based vertical blind solution applied. What I use are those plastic air duct redirectors on top, then I just push those couple of blinds behind it to avoid the flapping of the blinds.
