W10 messed up my computer

newest W10 update turned on a blinking "run as administrator" icon on taskbar. Now I can't even bring up anything with the W logo in the left bottom corner - not even to turn off or search.....Help! Please....

yes, and all was fine till the update was installed again....

you need to choose the IE flash player to download with IE and you need to choose the firefox version and download it with firefox if you use those browsers, You must get the proper version and use that browser to download and install. when you go to that link Zep provided called reinstall flash you will see which browser it is for if it is not the rigth one then you see that link that says Different operating system or browser? click that and it will offer you the links to the other options you could run the Secunia OSI and it will tell you what needs updating nad also provide the link directly to it. for any of these make sure any extras are unchecked including on the download page any thing McAfee or Norton related. W8 is very, very diff from XP, and yes you can screw it up if you don't know what you are doing. are you talking about IE browser on one of the tiles on boot up? or are you going to desktop mode? what is it you are trying to do exactly?

I've got all-clad. And I use it on high heat on a regular basis--so far so good (I've had it for about 6 years). I use metal utensils, as well as silicone (don't like wooden utensils, since they're porous and I'm not comfortable about getting them truly clean). And yes, I've used it in the oven, as well. You shouldn't get burned on spots, if you clean the pieces well after each use. If you do see some of those speckles starting to form, 'scour' the pan with a little baking soda--it takes them right off (would have saved your cookie sheets, if used regularly). Barkeeper's Friend is a good idea, but I only use toxic cleaners as a last resort on surfaces that touch food--baking soda is a better choice--it does an amazing job of cleaning, is non-toxic, non-abrasive, kills germs, deoderizes, etc. It's the first cleaner I reach for in the kitchen as well as the bathroom. One caution--if you're new to All-Clad, and if your previous pans had coated handles. the All Clad handles will get quite hot after a while--be sure to always use a potholder when picking up the pans after they've been on the range.

Lazypup has the right idea for long term storage - use hard drives. Do not depend on camera memory cards and thumb drives for permanent storage. These eventually go bad with age. Do not trust any that are more than 5 years old. The end life may be 10 years. These cards and drives contain a 'keep-alive battery' and when the battery dies, so does the card. If you have cards that are more than 5 years old, its a good idea to replace these. A solid state memory junction is good for about 10,000 writes and rewrites. That is what kept this technology our of 'hard drives' for so long. Improvements and techniques have come along such that computer makers are beginning to place solid state drives (SSD) into lap tops. However, these are not perfect. A gamer might reach the life limit of a SSD due to his thousands of rewites to the disk. The average used probably will not reach this limit before the computer conks out or a replacement is bought. I had a bunch of photos stored on CDs, but I was warned by a genealoguy instructor to switch because the technology is changing and CDs will go the way of tape and floppy disks - these will be obsoleted in favor of DVDs. In the not too distant future, manufacurers will stop making CD drives and disks. Personally, I prefered CDs over DVDs for photo storage due to the larger spot size and separation compared to a DVD. But this won't matter in the future if no drives exist to read the CDs. As far as I can see, storage of digital photos and genealoggy files are a huge problem for me. Right now, I hobble along by moving these files to a external hard drive and that drive runs only when making backups. The rest of the time, it is off. (A purist would rightly claim this is not safe; Its much better to have a second backup copy on a another drive.) This leads to setting up a RAID array to improve relaibility. I have not done so since I am not well schooled about the features and behavor of RAID arrays. That is something I should learn.

I have no idea what the update was, but it took forever to download and install or whatever they do.....I had done system restore, and then "it" was installed again.... All was well right after the restore...

I found the updates KB3172729, KB890830, KB3176493. Looks like they were intalled on Aug.9 and again on Aug.11....

Problem solved! Guru son walked me through a malware removal program install = found 196 things! All is well now.... Thanks to all of you!

Sounds like your antivirus/security software let you down. You may need to change what you use. If you're the only user of this PC, you may also need to reexamine your own internet use and download practices.

Failing to make changes with either or both of these things may cause your problems to recur.

Just because you got an instruction to install an update doesn't mean it was a legitimate one. Next time be suspicious of things that appear to be official, but could be malware in disguise. I think you are too trusting: "I have no idea what the update was, but it took forever to download and install or whatever they do." Typically when Windows does an update, unless you are set to have all updates automatically installed, you should have the opportunity to review what the update is and make a decision about whether it is something you want to do. The fact that you did not get this option is a clue that you had an infection. What were you doing on the computer just prior to the problem?

I have W10, and there is no option - it always updates automatically....

The new W10 Anniversary upgrade is now available and I just installed it. It takes a long time with many restarts just like when we got W10 a yr. ago, But it has many new features and added online security and it's even faster. You can find it at security & updates, then click on learn more.. (this one is not automatic)
