W10 messed up my computer

newest W10 update turned on a blinking "run as administrator" icon on taskbar. Now I can't even bring up anything with the W logo in the left bottom corner - not even to turn off or search.....Help! Please....

yes, and all was fine till the update was installed again....

Bobbie, my friend, you may be right. Who knows? However, if you download a laundry list all at once and have to reboot doesn't it seem a little logical that the reconfiguration could be placed in jeopardy with all the "floating" uninstalled O/S data? Also, if you limit the update installs and there is a concern you can readily identify the offender as one of two rather than speculating over an extended list. My antique DUN rate of 3 minutes a MB does not make it pleasant to have to redo any downloads. I am confident that my prior concern was due to doing all at once as when I returned to my personal discipline and installed them in pairs they updated fabulously. Thanks for your point of view. I guess it is the old story of whatever works for an individual is what works best. DA

Thought I'd update. Got Windows installed without a hitch, Dell talked me through it. I debated whether to put Win 7 in since I was starting from scratch but worried some of my software might not work Everything went well except I couldn't find drivers for some things such as my wireless adapter so couldn't get on line. Called Linksys and they spent over an hour trying to get the driver in and finally did. That was the best part, finally getting on line and getting hit with a zillion MS updates. I have misplaced or lost some software. We moved here in March and I could not locate my Office disk, wireless mouse/keyboard software and a few other things, might have gotten lost in the move. I'm most concerned about Office 07. I paid for it. Dell says they can't help and I could try contacting MS and see if they would do anything. I haven't moved any of my files back yet. Otherwise, I feel like the computer runs better than when it was new. Things seem different, have to fool with fonts and views, but I'm amazed how effortlessly the machine runs. This computer always seemed to have a few 'glitches' but I was used to it. Now it seems so fast and smooth (of course there isn't much running on it yet.) I don't know how to thank everyone for all the support and help I received. You are the best friends anyone could ever ask for. I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks! What IowaGirl and ChemoCurl wrote will work. It's the only way to cancel your print job. Unplugging the printer won't do work because the computer will continue spooling the print command. So, cancel the print as explained above. The problem is it takes so long for it to cancel, so you will have to restart the computer for the cancel command to take effect. The dreaded problem I have with WindowsXP is doing it the one time doesn't work. If the first time doesn't work, restart the computer and do it a second time. Then restart again. Otherwise, you just have to sit and wait for the print job to cancel.

I finally found how to bring up search - answer- Windows cannot find Settings.... What is up, I wonder?

What update are you referring to? because the W10 anniversary update/upgrade is available now.

I have no idea what the update was, but it took forever to download and install or whatever they do.....I had done system restore, and then "it" was installed again.... All was well right after the restore...

I found the updates KB3172729, KB890830, KB3176493. Looks like they were intalled on Aug.9 and again on Aug.11....

Problem solved! Guru son walked me through a malware removal program install = found 196 things! All is well now.... Thanks to all of you!

Sounds like your antivirus/security software let you down. You may need to change what you use. If you're the only user of this PC, you may also need to reexamine your own internet use and download practices.

Failing to make changes with either or both of these things may cause your problems to recur.

Just because you got an instruction to install an update doesn't mean it was a legitimate one. Next time be suspicious of things that appear to be official, but could be malware in disguise. I think you are too trusting: "I have no idea what the update was, but it took forever to download and install or whatever they do." Typically when Windows does an update, unless you are set to have all updates automatically installed, you should have the opportunity to review what the update is and make a decision about whether it is something you want to do. The fact that you did not get this option is a clue that you had an infection. What were you doing on the computer just prior to the problem?

I have W10, and there is no option - it always updates automatically....

The new W10 Anniversary upgrade is now available and I just installed it. It takes a long time with many restarts just like when we got W10 a yr. ago, But it has many new features and added online security and it's even faster. You can find it at security & updates, then click on learn more.. (this one is not automatic)
