backing up new computer

I have a new HP pc, W10. I want to do a complete backup to an external hard drive. Can I avoid backing up Facebook files? Don't think they're worth using space for.... Also, would this backup take the place of a recovery disk? Thanks.

Maybe you'd like to create a "system image"? Something like this?

I really don't know about the Facebook files. If you're talking about cached browser files I suppose you could clear browser cache prior to backing up but the space required to backup a few cached browser files would probably be so small that it wouldn't matter much either way.

Yes. I would either download and burn the bootable Windows 10 ISO or at least create the "system repair disk" (when offered by the system image tool). That way I'd have something to boot to in order to do the recovery (just in case my system wouldn't even boot up).

Another possibility...

I use a third party utility (Acronis True Image, there's a free Western Digital edition as well as a free Seagate edition), because of familiarity and habit. And I suppose because I've also used it to restore successfully (earning my confidence). I'm not saying the Windows image tool is either superior or inferior to Acronis; I'm not qualified to judge.

I'm not sure how you set up your backup drive, but mine only backs up files periodically according to a schedule. The schedule I chose was to backup at 3am when I'm not using it. In my experience, when the backup drive is copying files from the main hard drive, the main drive might respond a tad slower. However, being on the Internet and surfing to things like Facebook shouldn't really be affected unless you are trying to upload pictures, etc., while the backup is running, especially since it sounds like you have a newer computer with probably adequate RAM. You may coincidentally have something else going on.

Interesting enough, computer was fine until I tried to open Photoshop C3. Like last week, it gets stuck on MMXCore Routines when opening. Tried uninstalling it last week, but apparently it didn't happen. Thought maybe it would open since computer was running okay now. Computer crashed. it is not all because of windows 7 it is because you asked and researched how to do it with out going in blind and that is why you were successful! I have done the exact same thing using xp, 7 and various flavors of linux, learning how to do it is what makes it a success no matter what system.

Continuous, instantaneous backups is massive overkill. What you're saying is that your saved files are so special, your (personal) memory and your time are both so very limited, and the risk of a PC failure any minute of the day is so imminent, that anything other than immediate backups puts you in jeopardy. To that, I say, nope. Very unlikely to be the case, I don't care who you are or what you do. And doing so can foster an unwarranted paranoia. And you realize that by keeping your one backup copy continuously connected to your PC, you risk losing what's on your PC AND your backup if there's a power surge or a hiccup in the PC's power supply. Not a good practice no matter how you look at it. You needn't use Windows backup, or what came with the drive, if these don't do what you prefer. There are lots of free backup programs that should be more useful to use. Many apps (like Excel or Word) will do save backup copies every few minutes. Isn't that enough? Once a day is overkill for most people, every few days or week should suffice for most, but so be it. For the occasional something special when your backup is between cycles, attach it to an email and save it as a draft. Or put it on a thumb drive and then remove it from the PC. Done.

I've been using Acronis for many Years to make Clone Drives! I've never had a problem with Acronis True Image. With the Upgrade to Windows 10 my Acronis no longer works, need to Upgrade to a Newer Version for Windows 10.

I did however use a Freeware Program called AOMEI Backupper and it does the same job Acronis did for me and it's done it in Windows 10 for Free!

Guess I could have downloaded the Free Version of Acronis from Western Digital as I do have a Brand New 500gb WD Black Drive in my Laptop! I added this WD Drive after I'd already cloned the drive using AOMEI Backupper!

I had gone from a 500gb Toshiba Drive @ 5400rpm to a Crucial 256gb SSD Drive and kept the 500gb for storage. I wanted to Clone the Toshiba Drive to the New SSD Drive and used AOMEI Backupper to do this so I didn't need to reinstall everything again. I then replaced the 500gb Toshiba Drive @ 5400rmp with a 500gb Western Digital Black Drive @ 7200rpm.

I haven't tried the Back Up Portion of AOMEI Backupper, just the Clone portion. One of these days I'll get around to testing it! The Clone portion worked without a hitch and I'm expecting the same from the Back Up portion!
