I salvaged my reputation.. whew!

I posted about the buffalo wing sauce on my husband's Polo T-shirts.... tried almost everything in world on them!... since then he also dribbled chocolate and chili on two more shirts. Here is what I tried on all of the shirts. Shout, Regular powdered Tide with Oxi Clean, Clorox Bleach Pen and a Tide Stain Remover Pen, Even let them soak in the Tide/Oxi mix... stains still there. So today I went to Walmart and bought powdered Tide W/Bleach and spray Zout Stain Remover and Tide Rescue Pods for whites and colorfast fabrics. Well the combination of todays buys 3 did the trick!. I can now hold my head up again... all the stains are gone. I have quite an arsenal of laundry products now... feeling a little like Larsi and Mama...lol

I love the Tide Rescue booster pods for whites/brights! They're a powerhouse at stain removal esp combined with a top detergent! I have 2 messy little kids and can't always wash right away, lots of tomato based stains ( extra messy boy loves Italian, pizza, baked pastas, yes wings, lol) I do recommend an extra rinse when using these booster pods, especially when also using a powder detergent.

The average person looking at a wing cross-section would think it pushed down, not lifts up. Common sense would fail them there. And not wanting to be disagreeable, but I think common experience (emperical results), not common sense, guides most good gardening. We often don't know specifically why something works, at least in any rigorous sense, but we know what has worked reliably for others and ourselves. Reasonable, common sense solutions can sometimes lead us astray. Common sense might easily have all our pear pruning in the dormant season (as with most other deciduous fruits): practical experience shows that some summer pruning is often more effective. Common sense had us removing lawn clippings from the lawn ("leads to thatch buildup"): actualy experience (experiment) shows that leaving them is best apparently and has nothing to do with thatch. It is often hard to figure out when to defer to authority (whether university or neighbor) and when to go with the gut, with common sense. Fortunately in gardening, experimenting and failing occasionally has little risk.

*blushes* Thanks! I AM feeling rather pleased with myself--and I DID have my morning coffee out there. And my afternoon tea, and a beer yesterday evening...it's rather like being a new mom--in a weird way. All I want to do is gaze lovingly at "my" handiwork...except it doesn't need feeding and changing(!). Perry--glad you think I did an OK job documenting. I really worked at it...the only thing I would do differently is I would take MORE "before" pictures. The New Dawn will be going in at either the left end of the bed (if you are looking OVER the rail with the driveway at your back) or the center...I bought it on reccommendation of the person at the nursery--who said it got to be 10-12 feet. THEN I looked it up on GW--goodness. "Rank grower--upwards of 20ft+..." I think I'll be whacking it back! Given that growth habit it'll probably go up AND over the fence! DH fell in love with Westerland--but the bush they had at the nursery was expensive and somewhat puny...am going to see if I can find something similar at another rose nursery--otherwise I'll go back and get the Westerland we saw. (Or perhaps order one from Ashdown.) I don't spray--so I need roses that are disease resistant. Black Spot and (to a lesser degree) powdery mildew are real problems down here. I have a buff beauty pillar that has done really well...am hoping New Dawn lives up to it's reputation for disease resistance. I'll post a picture once the roses are in! melanie

HAHAHAHA! Very good point! And in the spirit of experimentation, I think I'm going to leave the one bed as it is (just finish mulching it) and see how it works out (and then remove the landscape fabric in the fall and start again), and use newspaper in the other bed (which didn't get anything but soil yet). I figure even if the landscape fabric ends up not stopping the weeds, it won't look any worse than it did before I started! One of these days I'll have to post before and after pics -- y'all will be appalled at how the previous owners left the place!

rusty sink overflow and drain--salvageable?

I have an original cast iron sink that has an overflow compartment that is rusted. My problem is that i had the sink professionally sprayed by a reputable comanyvin Buffalo NY. shortly after I noticed rust around the overflow holes. That led me to looking beniethvthe sink where I found that there is a small pocket where the water ends up going and it is rusted in there I assume from the standing water what can I do to get the rust out? Maybe pour coke in there? they say it desolves rust. Please any suggestions?

boba1... I do have Biz on hand. I have always used it for soaking old or yellowed antique linens and doilies. Here while back I soaked an antique yellowed doily in Biz. I thought it came out fine but when I laid it out to dry I still saw yellowed areas on it so soaked it again in the Tide Oxi Clean. This time it came out white as can be, I just thought the Biz had done a decent job... I guess this was in the back of my mind is why I went straight to the Oxi Clean instead of trying Biz.

Biz has more Sodium percarbonate and enzymes than OxiClean so it will always do better at whitening...could be MiMi that the first soak loosened it all up and the second removed what was left. I always have to more than one soak on vintage linens/cottons.

I use Biz in conjunction with my detergent--either Gain or Cheer powder--I think the former is almost as good as regular tide. I use Tide w/Bleach Alternative for whites and light colors done in hot water.

Boba..you do know Tide with Bleach Alternative has no oxy bleach in it...of course you know...lol..I also like Gain..currently have the original, with oxi and the lavender. The one with oxi is my fav Gain, smells like something from my past and I keep thinking it smells like old original Oxydol. Anyway if I use Downy Free with Gain the clothes smell light and fresh. I also agree that Gain is almost as good as Tide...P&G does make some great products, no doubts about it...if only they would work on the scents...but maybe they are or I'm imagining it, but seems like a lot of the different Tides are beginning to smell better even the pods.
