Comments (5)The things on the base of the tree are aerial burr knots, the rootstock is trying to sprout roots above ground. It sounds like the tree was grafted high. They don't really hurt anything other than giving bugs a place to hide. You could mound up dirt against the trunk, but I don't know how high they go. Comments (4)The yellow spots look like cedar apple rust to me. Best controlled by preventatively spraying any fungicide product containing myclobutanil as the active ingredient around May 10th-June 1st for your area. The easiest fungicide to get having this ingredient is Spectracide Immunox available at some Ace hardware stores or online. Comments (3)Agree with the above. Once that sort of fungal organism appears, the tree (or branch if not on the trunk) is dying from the inside out. But trees showing these sorts of growths can often live on for many years, with the exterior portion of the wood providing the support and the transport pathways for water and nutrients....See Moreedjusted
