What is a mother to do?

My 25 year old daughter's boyfriend of three years broke up with her in December. Although this was her first real relationship, we thought this was the one. They had talked of marriage but things changed for him we guess. Anyways, we loved this kid and his family (even vacationed together) and was totally shocked by the ugly way he chose to break things off with our daughter. No regard for her feelings whatsoever.
We also were very disappointed that his mother in particular has yet to text, call or anything to our daughter just to say she's sorry. Our daughter was quite close with his mother and this has hurt her (and us) greatly. Recently, we suspect that our daughter and her ex are "talking" again. We do not know what extent that means and she chooses not to share what's going with her life, because of how she knows we feel about her ex. He even recently texted my husband asking to talk, but my husband refuses to respond. We are in protective mode obviously. She chose to stay in the area where they lived together and moved, which is 8 hours away from us.
Today is the ex's mothers birthday... We haven't spoken/texted or anything since the breakup but am wondering if I should wish her a happy birthday (via social media) or just continue to keep out of it and not make any contact. I don't know what to do, but when I saw it was her birthday today, my inclination was to respond. I know this sounds silly, but really don't know what to do. Any ideas ladies?
