Is Bona Sealer Necessary on Unfinished Hardwood Floor?
Comments (36)Hello Folks, We are testing out some hardwood floor stains & finishes on a section of our white oak floors before embarking on the larger project. In the first photo below, we applied 1 layer of Minwax pre-stain wood conditioner followed by 2 layers of Minwax oil-based stain (natural 209), let it dry for 3 days then applied 2 layers of Bona Traffic HD in satin and left it to dry overnight. In checking on it in the morning, we noticed areas that became "dandelion yellow" (circled in the photo below) as noted by SJ McCarthy and wanted to know if this an artifact of not applying a sealant after staining/prior to adding the Bona Traffic HD. Any thoughts on how to avoid this? Would applying a sealant prior to the water-based Bona Traffic HD prevent the yellowing? If so, what Bona sealant would you advise using? The second photo underwent an identical process except we only applied 1 layer of the Minwax oil-based stain (natural 209) and observed minimal yellowing. Don't know what to make of that. We'd like to use the combination of the Minwax product and the Bona Traffic HD so any advice on how to prevent the yellowing would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance. Cheers, Anthony (Apologies if the photo quality isn't great)...See Morewhy is everyone pushing water based poly?
Comments (123)Angela Noble, Applying 3 coats is meaningless if, the contractor does not prep or apply the proper coverage. All of Pallman's water borne finishes require a final cut at 100 or 120 grit and 450-500 coverage per gallon. The sealer will seal 80% of the pores with proper coverage of 450 sq. ft. per gallon. Allowing 20% of wood for the first coat of polyurethane to grab onto. With an additional 2 coats of water borne polyurethane at the proper coverage of 450-500 per gallon. Your floors should be more than sealed. If, the products was diluted or applied improperly. Your floors will not have the proper coverage and will not be properly sealed. Leaving it vulnerable to premature wear and failure. How was the product applied: T-bar, rolled, brush? Are there gaps in the floor? Was there any thinning of the product?...See MoreMost durable, hardest sealer for hardwood
Comments (8)It's not necessarily scratches. It's marks that don't come off. I did have company once that had a plastic high chair with plastic rollers. That left scratches everywhere. I have a nylon soft broom. If I sweep and "lightly" rub to get something off the floor, it leaves "sanding" marks. I've already sanded and put poly in one bedroom but I really don't like the way it looks like plastic laying on top of the wood. Everywhere that there's a felt pad under furniture legs, there is a round mark. I'm attaching a pic. You can also see a scratch in the floor to the right of the leg marks. This is 3/4" thick real wood flooring, not engineered. We do not wear shoes in the house or have animals or kids inside....See More100% Clear hardwood sealer for white oak
Comments (5)The Loba Sealant and then using the Loba line (I'm a fan of the 2K Supra AT in the satin) will give you everything you want. I agree that several of the Bona's will add a snick of yellow when used. White Oak needs the sealant before the finish is applied because White Oak has tannin pull with water based polyurethanes....See MoreUser
