My sod struggled with the 95 degree days this summer in the front of the home

Fescue is going to struggle in those kinds of temperatures no mater what you do. You will have summer losses due to fungus, weeds, heat and drought stress etc. , especially in a full sun area.

My other questions are, should I aeriate or verticut?

I prefer verticutting, however care must be taken with an established lawn to not destroy it in the process.

What kind of starter fertilizer should I use

They are all the same with the exception of one, there is a Scotts starter with mesotrione. If you can get that one. If not, any will do.

Is 5/ lbs per 1k SF adequate for overseeding

It's going to struggle even more than the fescue in the summer, but if it gets water it should be ok. I'm going to add some bluegrass into my mix as well this year.

My overall goal is to have the most consistent and best looking yard in the neighborhood.

My last home was a hybrid Bermuda turf, which I loved. Understanding Bermuda is not an option at my new home, I'm trying to make the best decision for seed type for my upcoming project. I follow the montra of deep infrequent watering with irrigation system. I had a few boughts of brown patch this year when it was wet and humid early in the summer. Overall, my transition to TTF has been painless. Understanding the amount of direct sunlight I receive in the front yard, I'm wondering if Rambler, or Mustang is worth the investment versus purchasing a quality TTF blend from a local supplier. Having never used the verticut method, sounds like I may want to pay an experienced subcontractor to handle this for me? I have access to Vendors and subcontractors because of my occupation. My biggest obstacle is filling in bare/ thin spots in my lawn where the initial sod didn't take well that the builder cared for before I purchased the home.

Any advice is appreciated.

Here are a few photos from my prior post, the order of the pics is from day 1 when I purchased the home to most current condition. I Overseed in late spring trying to fill in the bare spots and have eradicated 95% of the weeds.

I am of the opinion that genetics make a big difference, so you should get the best seed you can afford. A mix of Rhambler, Bullseye, Falcon IV, Mustang, LS-1200 or a monostand of either one should turn out spectacular.

Verticutting is not a big deal. Cut the grass as short as your mower will go and run the verticutter over it, it will pull out the thatch and create small grooves into the soil. Do 2 passes perpendicular. Adjust the depth of the blades to where it barely scratches the surface, just enough to pull out the thatch. If you go too deep it will start digging out the existing grass out by the root, it will be obvious.

Just curious because I'm planning on slit-seeding my front yard for my reno, you recommend basically scalping the lawn first prior to verticut or slit seeding?

It's more of a must-do than a recommendation. If you don't scalp the lawn it will grab the grass blades and tear all the grass out.

I am finalizing my plans for overseeding. I have decided to rent a slice seeder for overseeding. Anyone have any advice before I do? I assume I need to flag my sprinkler heads and avoid them? Seed of choice for this year is:

I broadcast sprayed yesterday with a good amount of 2D4. Any other suggestions? I have a particular weed that I can seem to get rid of, I'll follow up later with a few pics of this weed for advice. It's a clump of crab grass that has migrated all over the front yard.

Are you on a pre-emergent routine? If not, you should consider starting one asap. Prodiamine or Dimension are the 2 most used by folks here. You could also use Tenacity at seeding I believe. Hopefully you can prevent future crabgrass infestations.

I moved into the home in May and have been working with post emergent products, no pre products. I can give Tenacity a try if it's safe to use with overseeding.

Tenacity can be used as a pre-emergent during seeding of TTTF, it will block a lot of weeds and let the fescue through.

Is this a product that I can broadcast spray with a hose sprayer?

Yes it is. Read the label , it takes very little of it, about 0.15oz per thousand. They give you a syringe with the bottle.
