Getting rid of Liriope in rose beds
Comments (7)You are in the same boat I'm in, trying to get rid of persistent grass/weeds or anything that do not die from persistent weeding from the gardener. I read in a post that RoundUp causes death or severe damage to nearby plants even though the gardener used extreme caution during application. The damage may not be present until the following year. The posters said that RU is transferred from the inflicted plant through its roots to the unintended plant. YIKES! I trust Jeri when she says not to use RU. I hope folks chime in on our question as the summer time is the best time to eradicate these pesky weeds. Best, Audrey...See MoreI think maybe I'm going to be really happy with this unknown rose
Comments (5)Thanks, greenhaven. That's what was thought last year when I asked for help on it - cottonwood seeds or similar, but I saw no sign of those, was out a lot, you'd kind of notice. This year there have been a lot, so it is a logical supposition. They wouldn't cause buds to be deformed and blooms odd as well, so I lean to aphids for the damage. The first two pictures are one bush, and if there were aphids on there, I got them, several on other roses in that area, seem to have gotten most of them. The last picture is the same kind of rose, just in a different spot. I'm sure there are those cottonwood seeds on there, too, but am also sure now that york_rose was right. I think I see both cottony seeds and leavings from aphids in my photo. I know for sure aphids were on the other one because I saw them, and I did blast them as best I could for a couple days, the hose is awkward to pull around there, guess I need to pick up a couple more guides, often miss them, but they help....See MoreHelp! I think I'm losing my roses to powdery mildew.
Comments (20)Thank you, thank you -- all of you. I am going to try to post some pics I took today. I am hoping they will be more revealing. Sorry that last one is so blurry. Berndoodles, thanks for the pics of leaf hopper damage. I think I certainly have that, don't you (referring to the pic with the lovely bugs)? I also found some webbing, so I think maybe I have spider mites. Oh, joy! And I also think I have powdery mildew. I would love anyone's advice. I sure wish I had a flatbed scanner. My daughter has one, but she is out of town. And I wouldn't mind if we had a Bug Man out here in Colorado. However, I took samples to my local nursery and the very nice rose lady there confirmed that I have several separate problems. She thought that the drooping rosebuds were caused by thrips and told me to go home and cut all of those drooping buds off and dispose of them. She thought I had powdery mildew, too, and also spider mites. She advised that I use Bayer All-in-One spray, so I bought that, but after reading the instructions, I decided to try Neem Oil because the instructions said not to use when bees are active, and they are very active on Ballerina, at least during the day, but maybe I could use it at night. I sprayed yesterday very thoroughly with Neem oil and will repeat in 7 days. However, since my roses are so badly infected, and with multiple buggies or whatever, maybe I will have to go toxic. Another problem with me using a toxic spray is I have large pots of herbs close to Ballerina, in fact right beside it. I think I could cover the pots with black trash bags or something. But I also have black raspberries whose vines are kind of intermingled with one of my New Dawn climbers. I'm not sure if I can cover all of them enough. Maybe if I used a hand sprayer rather than a hose-end sprayer it would be easier. So what do you think? Thanks again. Marlene...See MoreContainer Roses Indoor--I think I'm ruining them!
Comments (15)I've been growing roses outside in containers for a good 15 plus years now. While I'm not in your zone, our area is notorious for erractic weather. Single digit and even a sub-zero dip are not unheard of around here. 98% of my potted roses have survived. If you grow modern roses (HT's, Floribundas, minis etc.) many of the yellows and oranges can be more winter tender then other colors, so additional protection may be warrented. Also the bigger the pot the less the problems. Any pot under 12 inches (5 gallon) can experience more damage. Not that you want to put a small rose in a big pot of soil, but additional warmth may be needed (such as surrounding it with the larger roses in pots (group hug), or closer to the wall, or even putting the smaller rose pot in a larger empty pot and filling the void between the two with straw, bark mulch, styrofoam peanuts etc.).....Where you place the rose is also important. Next to a wall is good, and that wall should be on the West or South side. The east side will have more problems. Canes, frozen overnight, are suddenly hit by the warmth of the rising sun, and their cells can burst from the abrupt change in temperature. I have several roses on the East side, and they have had more cane damage then those I've placed on the west/south side in a cold winter. The north side doesn't work for obvious reasons....To echo others advice, get your roses outside if at all possible, don't overwater and give extra protection if needed. No one is in charge of mother nature, but with a little care there's a good possiblity that you will be successful....Maryl...See MoreUser
