My no-backsplash backsplash
Comments (33)I'm not seeing a current picture witht he sink -- just the one with the paper down on the wood which I understand to be before use. That wall looks like it has a raw end of drywall, not a side that is finished (paper or whatever) or maybe even no drywall. It looks like they tried to smooth joint compound in there, either by itself over your studs and built up or over something less than a full side of finished drywall. Joint compound will turn to mud (that's what they call it when it's wet -- hence the verb to "mud" the walls) and dissolve away if it gets wet. Paint will only seal the surface, and if water gets behind it -- well, I dare say it is probably worse than damp sheetrock, which is worse than damp green board. You say they had to sheer away your window sill. Did that sill come below the window too? I don't think you've got clean drywall there. I think you've got a really poor job of mudding and an even worse job of sealing the joint. That's my guess....See MoreDid you have your backsplash installed AFTER the faucet was in?
Comments (12)tile first is industry standard. its much simpler for the installer and keeps your new sink and faucet flawless. make sure both are covered in plastic while still giving room to get caulking gun in for silicone, etc appliances have tile behind them not up to them so also need to be moved out. thats why normally it happens first. then final plumbing/electrical and appliances. especially of its gas stove tht will be a plumber visit all at the end anyways. Most importantly dont call her ”dramatic” because she wants to do the job right and happens to be female. Do let her know that in rhis case the faicet will already be in as well as sink and that you appreciate ger working woth that and taking the extra time to protect your things and do tile/grout and silicone then a final clean up around faucet that sits closely...See MoreBacksplash design...would love your opinions
Comments (32)I think one of the things that ends up missing in a lot of discussions about backsplashes, is that they are supposed to be easier to clean and more durable than a painted wall, and a painted wall is fairly easy to clean and pretty durable. I think the argument that a backsplash is needed because you are going to splash things on it gets a little weaker when the backsplash is stone or mosaic that is primarily ornamental and would be susceptible to stain and water absorption without sealing it. My gym recently updated the showers with stone tile and mosaic. They removed tile showers that were probably 60 years old. The stone requires a lot more maintenance, isn't as bullet proof as glazed tile, and, since they are used heavily, you can tell when they need to be resealed: they smell bad, like a combination of mold and mildew, and they feel slimy. I don't take showers there anymore. Not that this is going to happen to a residential kitchen backsplash---but my point is that a good paint would probably be just as good a backsplash from a functional standpoint as cleft stone. This sort of backsplash veers into the Ornamental category. As for the 1" backsplash not Adding anything to the look. I agree, but it doesn't subtract much from the look either: it's there primarily for function....See MoreIf you were my kd, what backsplash would you advise me to install
Comments (27)My first thought looking at your kitchen was jerusalem gold like sharb's kitchen assuming the color would work with your granite http://finishedkitchens.blogspot.com/2007/06/sharbs-kitchen.html But of course I was flipping thru the finished kitchen blogs trying to find the kitchen with the backsplash I was thinking of (which of course was near the end of the alphabet), I found two other ones Durago travertine mini-brick in beachlvr kitchen in the finished kitchen blog http://finishedkitchens.blogspot.com/2006/12/beachlvrs-kitchen.html Or Durango Split Face like epjenk's Kitchen http://finishedkitchens.blogspot.com/2007/06/epjenks-kitchen.html Here is a link that might be useful: Sharb's kitchen...See Morelharpie
