When having your backsplash installed
Comments (4)Thank you! I am not doing subway tile, but a traventine in a smooth pearl finish. The electrician suggested dropping the outlets after trying to find them. I have a terrible habit of trying to hide them with roosters and candlesticks! Babydoll, I thought about different plug shapes too. I think I need to talk to him. We have to get GFI outlets installed. We have none in the kitchen. It's strange though, looking at all these threads and their beautiful kitchens, I never see their outlets. Thanks for advice. Enjoy your new kitchen too. I love subway tile....See MoreWhere did you end your backsplash?
Comments (8)End of counter. My cabinet runs stop a couple of inches before doorways on each end, so I had the counters go all the way to the door frames and then the backsplash dies into the door frames as well. If your countertops don't end at a vertical structure like mine, I think it is a tossup depending on what you want to see on your wall. If your countertop ends in midair (so to speak), then you are going to have a vertical tile edge either way. The decision then is whether it looks better to have a simple vertical drop from the cabinet edge, or to have the tile jut out horizontally, turn a corner and then drop down. I am not so sure I wouldn't choose to end the tile at the cabinet edge in that case. Best thing is to look at lots of photos of kitchens with counters ending where yours do and see which you like better. The only real rule is to make it functional -- if you are going to be pureeing tomato sauce on that edge of the counter, then you would want a backsplash behind it. :)...See MoreDid you seal your backsplash grout?
Comments (21)Ok: why does that sound not right to me? "has to breath: so don't seal" Well: if you stick 3cm granite on the walls or 2cm granite on the walls or 12x12 or 18x18 tiles on the walls .....and so on: How is that going to breath? Why would tiny grout lines help in the "breathing" process? I say use Durrock on the walls: slap up the mastic and install the material and seal it! if it's natural. I say seal the grout! Or paint it: if you paint it: with grout paint: it's not staining! My logical thinking only! OK if you are a vegaterian or never cook: Then what is the point of sealing? right? spaghetti sause: oil: grease: butter: red wine: grape juice: red juice; that;s pretty much the messy stuff: I like the idea of Stainless steel stove with the stainless steel splash behind stove area! Would solve that problem when it comes to cooking splatters!...See MoreHow to make your own tile and back-splash (pic heavy)
Comments (25)I'm not sure how I came across this post, I think it was displayed on the right side and I clicked on it being intrigued by the tile making. I was at one time interested in working with papercrete and hypertufa. But after enlisting my brother, who wasn't as enthusiastic, and my niece, who poured cement down my laundry room sink, which original to the house had lasted 70 years, and ruining three blenders, my interest waned. True to form, if I come upon difficulty in a project, I think of it as a sign for me not to continue. And really, after all these years of trying various crafts that result in crap, I should know better. I also should have known better than to ask my brother, who always says it can't be done to any of my unique design ideas. And I should have known better than to ask my niece, who once stayed up all night before having to drive to LA for an art show, cutting mat after mat after measuring once, twice, sometimes ten times, but always coming out with the wrong size. I think we both have math dyslexia. I should video us trying anything crafty to see where we go wrong. I think both of us having ADHD might have something to do with it. Sorry for the backstory and run on sentences. So, I just wanted to see if you continued with your venture. And to say sorry for whatever tragedy occurred to cause you to have to move to Florida. Not that there is anything wrong with Florida, but it isn't Panama. Which is one of my favorite places in the western hemisphere. I hope no one is upset that I brought up a seven year old post....See MoreAvanti Tile & Stone / Stonetech
