Cimifuga that just won't bloom
Comments (45)I searched for Cimifuga and found this thread. Oh, Wendy, that is just wrong! Six years and you get one little bloom before frost. Seems this plant, like some others, want a very particular place as similar to their natural growing situation as possible to perform well. It's not as easy as it might seem to replicate a good woodland setting above and below ground...and we can't change the atmospheric conditions where we live/garden. I'm going to have to accept that I can't have so many of the plants I'd like because I just can't give them the situation they need. I'm not there yet as I still search and drool over these gorgeous plants. I was investigating this plant again because I had a couple native plant nurseries tell me it wouldn't mind pretty deep shade with only flickers of filtered light all day except early Spring and late Fall. If it didn't bloom it wouldn't be worth it to me. The conditions I have aren't even near optimal and don't want to knowingly invite more plant unhappiness...theirs and mine. Hope you got a few more blooms to enjoy, Wendy....See MoreAmaryllis bulbs just won't bloom.
Comments (9)Well, these are in partial sun, and get a good amount of water, maybe too much? I have never fertilized them, but if anyone can tell me what to use, I'll give that a try. They are in fairly well-drained soil with a bit of sand/clay in the mix. I pulled them up and moved them today to a spot with more sun, and the bulbs looked healthy, nice thick roots. I guess I'll give them another try in the new spot and see what happens. I'm just glad to know that they don't necessarily need to be lifted/refrigerated or something like that. I just get jealous when all the neighbors have them going gangbusters and mine just put out foliage. At least the nice broad leaves are a good backdrop for other blooms....See MoreMy camera just won't stop
Comments (21)Margaret... If you want to post a photo, you can open a free account at photobucket.com, go to "my albums", click download, navigate to the photo and select. Then click "HTML code" under the photo. This will copy the code. Then just paste the code in your post. Preview your post, and the photo should be there. Looking forward to seeing your pics! SJN... I had to google Tillandsia, to see what you were refering to! I really know nothing about air plants. Every so often, one will mysteriously show up in my yard, and I purchased one from a local green market, a few years ago. It has multiplied, several times over, and blooms beautiful, tiny red flowers, once a year. I'll take a pic next time... I think in spring. I'll also check to see if it still has the ID tag hanging on it, when I get home from my trip. Tkanks, Neon... I hope to find a way to purchase that lot myself. All it takes is a bunch of money that I don't have! It isn't actually on the market yet, so I have some time. My neighbor is in his mid 80's, and is having trouble keeping up with the gardening. I help out where I can. The lot is inbetween our two houses, and he would love for me to have it... For a price! He's kind of waiting on me, while I'm stalling. It will break my heart to see it go to someone who will build a house, as it was one of the things that attracted me to my home, 14 years ago. Its tough typing this stuff with my thumbs, on my iPhone! Bob...See MoreIt just won't bloom!
Comments (27)So much good information here. I am in SW Florida and the nighttime temps get into the 40’s enough during January and February that I think they get enough cool temps. I know there iis a hotel in Naples that has them as a mass planting and they bloom. My first year here Iost my best biggest Clivia to crown rot. Now I use a fungicide regularly. I have repotted all into an orchid mix of Leica, bark, charcoal for better drainage. I have discovered with care the plant can come back from crown rot because the roots are still healthy and a new crown is formed. It has actually taken two years so might not be worth it. They have tried to bloom but the stalks don’t grow above the crown and they start to rot so I have had to remove the blooms, and spray with fungicide to save the plant. I think I haven’t been fertilizing enough so I’ll do better and see what happens next year. They need so much more care here than they did in WA, but, after having them for forty years, I have to keep trying....See Moreorganic_kitten
