new lineset with new HP install, have questions

Got estimate on new Am Std 2 ton HP and AH. Old unit 30+yrs AC 2 ton freon, new unit R410. Quote includes flush, vac test & hold, nitrogen for refrig connection. Sales rep said if we stay with old line (I think he said it was 1/4") we will lose 5%, install new and larger then cost will be $595. HP will sit outside next to AH, maybe no more than 5-6ft away. They would install on the outside of wall, lineset cover would cost extra. DH not thrilled about that, said it should be included. Does it typically cost extra and how much for less than 10ft would be acceptable

#1 - Is 5% acceptable loss, rep says not a big deal.

#2 - Is it standard to run new lineset on outside of wall. AH does not go through attic and sits in laundry room, so I was a bit confused as to why they would not just open drywall and install. I would pay extra for that.

I want to have some knowledge about the lineset before I ask him about the drywall etc. Will post sep thread later on equip when I receive the other quote.....if I ever get it.

I don't believe in shortcuts. Seems strange to bring this up at a late date. You should verify what your existing size is, something you can do yourself if inclined. And verify the correct size that dealer says AmStd recommends. I do know the right size. The $600 price is absurd just so you know.

no it's not standard to run the line along a wall. Ask him why he wants to do it this way. Maybe lazy?

The 5% loss is not a big deal if the current line set is an allowable size. A 30+ year old line set hidden inside a wall has the potential to develop a leak in the future even it were the correct size. I think you should spend the extra money and replace it.

It sounds like your contractor does not want to get involved in removing and repairing drywall. If you can't do it, then hire someone to prepare the opening prior to the HVAC installation, and repair it after the line set installation.

Thanks Canguy.......I think I heard someone mention Co-op when I was up lookin' at it deciding to buy it or not....to me it looked like a decent little lawn tractor....my first one so what do I know about lawn tractors. "TURF" I never heard of this brand but I'm glad you filled me in so it's made by MTD....then I'm wonderin' where to look for parts for this one or is it a throw away and buy a new one...I have too much money and time invested to do this....I've changed out everything except the engine and I guess this will happen in the spring of next year....you live in BC so I gather your familar with the Princess Auto stores...they have one in my area and qouted me $700 plus tax for a 12 or electric start 13 HP B&S OHV pressurized oil circulated with a oil filter I gather a short block would cost near the same...I've been readin' other posts where guys were buyin' new MTD's for $800 +I guess this be US price correct? anyhow you've told me what I needed to know and I thank you ever so much take care..Ampa

Try unplugging the power from the printer, then plug it back in, maybe that will give it a fresh start. At least that is what I do when printers give me a problem. They seem to have a mind of their own and get confused very easily as to what they are supposed to be doing.

You are planning to be out of town so obvously the delay will not interrupt service to you. If I were your plumber I would suggest that if there is even the slightest doubt it is always best to error on the good side and allow the countertop the additional cure time.

You can test the line set for leaks by closing one end of the line set (braze it closed.. and brazing in a access valve on the other end. Attach a nitrogen tank to pressurize it and see if the pressure drops over time. If it does, then either your brazed joints are bad or you've got a hole in your line set. If it checks out, I'd put a vacuum on it to see if it will hold. If it does, you're good... If you're good, put some nitrogen back into the line and leave it, till you're ready to do the install... Remember, this has to be done on both lines... Unless, you use a reducer(s) and join the 2 lines of the line set together ... cap off one end of the joined lines and put the access valve on the other end....

Tiger and Mike, thanks for the heads up. DH verified current size is 1/4". I had no idea importance of lineset until I red almost all HVAC forum threads. Have asked contractor #2 if this will be included so still waiting for estimate. Will probably have to make appt for yet another estimate if this one does not respond.

Sorry about starting new thread, wasn't sure if I was supposed to continue from old one ;)

The correct and recommended lineset size by Trane/AmStd is 5/8 x 3/8 for a 2 ton HP condenser.
