I've asked this before--maybe someone has a new way re: laminate
Comments (11)I know you posted this a while ago but I had the same problem and I just figured out how to fix it a few days ago and thought i'd share it.... We recently moved into a beautiful new home with laminate floors in the dining room, entry way, living room, kitchen and breakfast room and last but not least the bedroom. Long story short we have about 900 sq ft of laminate flooring. The floors looked fine when we looked at the house, during the inspection and when we moved in. When it came time to mop the first time I wasn't sure what to use on laminate floors so I thought I’d play it safe and use water only. When the floors dried it looked like there was a dull haze on them and after a few hours you where able to see every foot and paw print (we have 2 big dogs) I was confused as to what I did wrong and started to research online. Come to find out I am not the only person with this problem. There a so many forums and blogs with this subject I didn't know where to start. A lot of people suggest putting a water/vinegar/dish soap solution in a spray bottle and mop the floors with a slightly moist microfiber mop. That is a great way to MAINTAIN your laminate floors but in my case it did not fix the dull haze. By the way, I figured out that the dull haze is most likely residue left from products that the previous owners used. Damn you previous owners! I was desperate, annoyed and ready to rip out my laminate floors! I tried said water/vinegar/ dish soap solution, I tried bona for laminate floors, I even read somewhere that the magic eraser mop is supposed to take the residue off (it didn’t) I then tried bona laminate floor polish in the bedroom only and it looked great until it was time to mop again. The floor polish came right off and the nightmare started all over again. Then one day I was pinning around on Pinterest and saw a pin that lead to a cleaning blog and the girl was talking about cleaning soap scum in the shower with a 1:1 vinegar and dawn dish soap solution. She warmed up ½ cup of the vinegar mixed it with ½ cup of blue dawn dish soap (for some reason she insisted that it has to be the blue kind) sprayed it on her shower glass and scrubbed away and apparently it works wonders. So I thought to myself, since I basically have soap scum on my laminate floors and I don’t have anything better to do I will give it a try. I mixed up the miracle spray, sprayed it on a small area and scrubbed the hell out of it with one of those dish sponges that has a rough surface. My husband was freaking out and said I might scratch the floors but I didn’t care, I was in a scrubbing frenzy! I then wiped the solution off with water and vinegar, let it dry and walked over the cleaned area, jumped on it, made my dogs walk over it and lay on it and guess what? No dull haze and no foot prints! (And no scratches from the sponge) So far I have cleaned my dining room with this routine and I’m not gonna lie it’s the most annoying tedious thing I have ever done but it is worth it. I will try to finish my whole downstairs this week and then I will never ever use anything other than water and vinegar with a splash of dish soap to clean my floors. Some people even put a splash of alcohol in it to keep the floors from streaking....See MoreI'm a little anxious right now and I need someone to talk me up..
Comments (27)Sorry about not replying sooner! I had some trouble yesterday with certain children letting me on the computer long enough to answer emails and peek at the KT but that's it. Inconsiderate babies who don't nap properly! LOL ;) Anyway, thanks for all of the congratulations and good wishes. It is so exciting to know that we only have one more week here! Yippee! Now for the advice...motor home rental-too pricey...tenting it-this is early spring in Saskatchewan. We would freeze. There is no land because every lot is sold. Every lot. In the whole town. The "weekend" homes are an hour away and more expensive than a house in town would be. There is nothing to rent right at this moment and when stuff comes up it's snatched up in no time. I think there are people who troll the streets waiting for a rental to come up, LOL. I want Annie to go to the school in town so we have to live there. Also, Claire's preschool is there. All three Realtors know us personally and have all of our numbers and strict instructions to call if anything becomes available. And I so appreciate them for doing that. Gosh Patti, I wish you were close too! I would love for someone to play with the kids while I just laid on the couch and read a book for an hour. That would be SWEET! LOL Having time to house-hunt isn't a problem, it's the lack of options out there. :( I'm so sorry for your crummy experience Donna! We found out today that renting at the hotel is out of the question because it would be $2200/month at one and $1700/month at the other. *sigh* I don't even know if the campground is running at this time of year. We don't own a trailer and our car is too small to sleep in. :D I'm trying to see this as an adventure, and I was starting to think that staying at a hotel would be fun because I wouldn't have to clean, but darn. :) There is no one who can take our cats as our friends are either saddled with cats of their own or they are highly allergic. The hotels in town are not part of a chain, they are privately owned and thus why they can charge a goofy rate. Anyway, I appreciate every single person who responded to my thread. You are all wonderful and you are truly welcome at our house (once we have one) if any of you find yourselves in Saskatchewan. Thank you, thank you, and thank you! Comments (43)My father, who is 93, still lives in the house where I grew up in California. He has ivory Formica with gold glitter in his kitchen that was last remodeled in 1960. He also has a Dish Master faucet, the one where the soap is loaded into the container under the brush. When I visit him, it is like I have stepped back into my childhood....See MoreHelp me finish my fireplace...I need something positive to focus on
Comments (22)Oh ci_lantro...so many things, all the bad things. I am not exaggerating when I say we had to reframe the fireplace 4 times to get where we are. That was all just trying to make sure the house didn't burn down. Nope...cement board with mudding. the fourth rebuild was because they put a flammable drywall in direct contact with the face of the wood burning insert. We had to get the manufacturer, inspector, and company doing the fireplace install to make sure the contractor got this corrected...they collected money for permits never acquired, hired unlicensed help and had them install the electrical and mechanical work in the house, and Oh, he doesn't even have a contractors license. Apparently the bank accepted someone else's license number and never checked the contractors information. The gentleman whose license was provided to the bank, has never worked on our home. I learned Thursday, the wood flooring was installed incorrectly and will need to be completely replaced (cupping, shifting, quarter inch gaps). We also learned he did the gas lines wrong and they can't handle the associated BTUs. Permits and licensure matter. He also didn't pay his subs and they are coming after us...even though he has been paid funds towards these subs and never passed the money on. So I am focusing on the fireplace as we try to settle all the horrible, very bad things. Katinparadise...where do I look for a plasterer...how will this be different from the mudding?...See MoreUser
