Diluting oil based primer

So, I am in the process of painting some newly purchased Ikea furniture that had light brown lacquer finish over pine. I did not realized it has a light coat of lacquer until I am halfway done on one of the flat piece. I am using a Kilz Original oil based primer. When I am using the primer as it is, with a brush, the dried surface shows up with lots of ridges. However, when I am applying it with 1:1 thinner, the finish seems much smoother. Is there any drawback applying a diluted primer? we will be using 2 coats of primer anyway.

1:1 is a pretty heavy dilution. I think the manuf. used to recommend no more than 25% thinning. The newer low-voc oil primers by Moore state clearly "Do Not Thin" but I have disregarded that command many times, seemingly with no adverse effects?

You can also make oil paint more brushable by thinning with penetrol, or some boiled linseed oil for that matter.

1:1 is a pretty heavy dilution., and that is putting it mildly, no way would that work. all the priming properties would be diluted right out. You have received answers elsewhere

Yes it will work just fine. Primer is primer, whether it's acrylic or oil, both are formulated to accept either topcoat. Michael

I agree with paintguy. Acrylics increase their adhesion with time. What scraps off after 2 hours may well be adhered after 2 days. As to Behr paints, I have personally made test samples of Behr Ultra, Marquee and WB Alkyd over sections of hard, slick, high gloss oil paint. I hand these to customers and defy them to scratch it off with their fingernails. They are wearing thin with literally hundreds of tries, but they are still intact! Wanting to see the worst case scenario, I did not sand or de-gloss the oil paint. I am an old school painter, raised on oil pains and somewhat of a doubting Thomas. I have become a believer. If someone's paint is "balling up", I would wonder what is on that surface? Was it cleaned of oils from hands or other pollutants?

Yes, BIN in the red can. Be sure you get the alcohol based white pigmented shellac. Shellac is nothing more than the resin that is secreted by lac bugs (insects) that is dissolved in alcohol. (You can buy dry shellac flakes and make your own clear shellac using either denatured alcohol or grain alcohol like Everclear. Yes, that Everclear, from the liquor store.) Because the solvent in BIN is alcohol, it dries very fast and the fumes don't linger. Fumes seem pretty awful at the time of use but the length of time that you can smell them is measured in hours, not days/ weeks/ months.

A good primer would be one that says, it is a bonding sealing primer. You do need to lightly sand, before you do any type of primer. It needs to be a bit roughed up for the primer to adhere properly. The sealing bonding primer can be latex based, or oil based. You can recoat either one with latex paint. You also need to clean that trim well, before you light sand, or degloss, and make sure it is also wiped down well, before you prime it. The previous owners had done the same thing here, as your previous house. Thankfully, they didnt get to all the rooms.

The pigment has been reduced next to nothingmaking the primer useless.

Only "thin" oil based products with penetrol. Paint thinner is for cleaning brushes.
