Can we talk about Stainless BS w/warming shelf over range?
Comments (14)beekeeperswife- Our Garland range (the precursor to Bluestar) is 36" wide, with a 36" wide shelf and ss backsplash (not tiled in, it's a sheet of ss). The hood is 42" and where the range hood meets the backsplash there is about 1.5" gap on either side. It does not bother us, but we're not that detail oriented, YMMV. The warming shelf is a great place to store the kitchen timer, mortar & pestle, salt shakers and pepper mill, and a great plate warmer. The rangehood is vintage Broan, so no heat lamps, but if you are cooking either in the oven or on the rangetop, the plates will warm up nicely there. WRT the underside getting gummed up, we're not clean freaks, and the cleanliness of the underside of anything never weighs on my mind, so I've never even looked. There is a lip, so the underside is about 2" up underneath (if that makes sense). When I clean the shelf itself I swipe the finished edge of the lip and call it good. Comments (4)I have had a SS Kitchen Aid warming drawer for over two years now. It is completely stainless inside and out. It came with several NSF pans with lids and a shelf so you can stack plates or dishes. It has several settings and a moist or dry feature. The hottest setting is too hot to handle dishes without protective pads. The lowest setting is probably around 75F or proofing temp. I have put many breads and dough in it to proof and it worked fine. I put my drawer in the top position in a drawer base with two deep drawers underneath it. I have a granite counter, so when I have guests, I turn on the warming drawer and put the plates ON the counter. The plates will warm from the granite being warmed. It's much safer than having guests handle plates possibly being too hot. I have a lot of family here and we often eat at our home several times a month. I use that drawer all the time. I can cook ahead and get the kitchen cleaned up. All we have to do is pull out heated pans when everyone arrives. I cannot tell you how great that is if you've cooked a huge pan of BBQ and beans. Everything stays the perfect temperature. If I know someone will be home within the hour or so, I will use the drawer to keep food hot. If they're going to be longer then I will refrigerate food and they can nuke it in the microwave. I kept my eyes on eBay and found a brand new Warming drawer here in town for sale. The box was messed up and they said it had a scratch on it. I couldn't find a scratch anywhere on the thing. I also got this drawer for a whopping $300. AND it was brand new. I would most definitely buy one again. FWIW: My SIL has a Frigidaire WD in the bottom of her range. She doesn't use it. She's tried and she's spilled things trying to bend over and put dishes in the drawer. She would much rather have my set up....See Moreshow me/tell me about your niche/shelf over your range
Comments (11)There was a thread on this topic some months ago--see below. There are some good photos of niches. Our project is bogged down, but I have a few additional comments since I posted... Because we have to watch our pennies, I'm shopping in bargain places. One problem I have encountered is that oddball lots of tiles often don't include bullnose pieces as well as regular field tile sizes. The niche that we have roughed in will require some cute tricks to make ordinary tile edges seem attractive and classy; we don't want to just snip tiles and leave raw edges. DH, my sweaty equity, did not finish the niche smoothly when he created it in drywall because we knew we would cover it in tile. Now, we're thinking that we might not do the tiling right away and he'll have to pull out drywall tools and make a proper corner edging around the niche. This kind of "go back and do over" gig is getting very frustrating. [Meanwhile, I've found a smashingly exciting tile that of course only comes without trim pieces. It's sitting right next to me, thinking. Unfortunately it has a decidedly unfinished raw edge and will require tricky handling if we choose to use it. I just covered it over so I can't see it tempting me there on the table. Have to be more practical. ] Tile shops do carry a metal edging that can be used to finish off edges when no bullnose is available, but I haven't seen examples of it in actual use on a range niche. Would love to see a sample photo to reassure me. Also, remember that if you choose to work with a thick tile or a remnant of some kind of rock from countertop on the back of the niche, that will cut down the depth of the niche shelf. If you want the area above range/cooktop to be an artistic focal point, I humbly suggest that you either make a niche OR some kind of tile design but not both. If you choose too fancy a niche back, the items standing within the niche will compete with the tile design for viewer's attention. Mine will be a working kitchen, so we're planning to put oil bottles, vinegar bottles, salt shaker, etc. there and they are supposed to get top billing. Don't forget that you can suspend a second shelf in the niche if there's room. Comments (64)Mich, I've seen that in the stores and wondered about it. Some detergents don't have enzymes, I stear clear most of the time, however not every load is tragic, so not every load needs enzymes. If there's not a bunch of stains and the clothes just have the normal dust and body oils, that bottle of All probably does a nice job on darks and colors. I'm a powder fan but lately I've been enjoying some liquids, lol. Actually I have found liquids without enzymes make my sheets feel very smooth, I've been using a new boutique one I've run across, I'm not sure yet though if its the lack of enzymes or because its a liquid, but they do feel better I'll send a pic of it in a sec....See Moremiami mami
