Any regrets in your recent kitchen remodel?
Comments (14)Our kitchen (addition on a 100 year old house) is 10" by 30". We don't have a peninsula and just have an eating area with an oval table at the end of the space furthest from our dining room. Our set up is that on one side we have a long L that is our primary work space. The range is on the short leg of the L, and the sink and lots of counters are on the long end of the L. Across the room we have perhaps another 6 or 7 feet of counters that then merge into a built in with a wall oven combo, a fridge, and a closet (this part opens into the eating area). So, this entire set up ends just about across from the end of the counters on the long L. Our main gripe is that, when we have people over, the passageway between the short leg of the L and the opposite counters can get congested. We did not just want to do a galley between the two walls, and the room size (width) dictated that the passageway is only 30". Wider would have been better, but it would also have meant either no L or else a really teeny short leg on the short leg of the L (ours is just under 6'). This is something I'd definitely think about if I were you. And, I really think a peninsula would only work in a situation similar to mine if the opposite wall did not have any cabinetry. Hope this helps....See MoreBelly laugh at Renovation Realities kitchen remodel
Comments (19)Firsthouse - that is hilarious! That's like a diver that won't go in water. Stacys - I hear you. We felt better about our DIY skills after watching the show. We didn't attempt anything though without going overkill in the research dept, which saves a lot of foolish mistakes. Crabcakes - our cabinets alone were $23K and that was one of the cheapest estimates. Our granite was the super splurge at $8K. It was upper-midrange of the 8 estimates I got. 5K for appliances (I went really cheap with appliances - some of it is even Frigidaire), probably another $6K for hardwood the floor (conservative estimate). I don't know how anyone can do it on $15K. Seriously I have no idea! I priced out particle board Chinese made cabinets and even THEN it was $10K JUST for the cabs! Oh, and we did it all ourselves too. We did pay $1200 for a guy to come and hang, mud, tape, and texture our drywall. Other than that, we did everything....See MoreChallenging kitchen remodel
Comments (41)Unfortunately, most remodeling "experts" are not very good Kitchen Designers - unless they have one on staff. This is also true of architects. Architects and contractors (remodelers) have their place and expertise, but that rarely includes designing a kitchen that follows the "best practices" or the good design guidelines. Sadly, even some professional KDs also either don't know or ignore the best practices and guidelines as well. If you have a KD who is certified by the NKBA, then they should at least be aware of them, but whether they put them into practice is unknown. If you want a Kitchen that is truly functional as well as meets your needs, I strongly recommend two things: Take advantage of the people here - both to work out what you think you want and to vet designs you get from KDs Be heavily involved in the planning and design of your project - don't just hand it over to a KD / Contractor / Architect You're doing the above now - that's great! Keep it up and you will end up with a well-thought out design that works for the needs and wants of you and your family. +++++++++++++++ Regarding moving a sink...Moving a sink is actually pretty easy if you have a basement or even a crawl space below - which you have. It's when a house is on a slab that it's more expensive/work. It might be a bit more if you have to break into the foundation b/w the original house and the addition, but before you assume it will be too expensive, get some estimates. (We moved one sink and added another when we remodeled our Kitchen and the cost was a very small part of the entire remodel cost/effort.) In general, never assume something will cost too much, always find out! Sometimes you will be pleasantly surprised! (And, yes, sometimes it may be a not-so-pleasant surprise!)...See MoreCleaning/packing for kitchen remodel
Comments (35)I love the ‘brown wood furniture’ that came to me through family members no longer living, those pieces have already made it to 40+ years and all I have to do is keep it clean so it survives unpainted and as originally assembled by Ethan Allen (why anyone would paint something wood and of quality I will never understand but people do it and often these painted pieces end up at flea markets after whoever had it got past their ‘boho shabby chic’ phase). I did give my aunt all the China in the pattern she and my mom chose when they got married (‘68 for Mom and ‘69 for my aunt) before the mister and I moved cross country August 2017. I have my own blue willow pattern set that can be washed in the dishwasher, and if I need more than 12 place settings then the kids can all just get paper plates. ;) I have a teapot, sugar and creamer in the pattern that are more display given that I don’t trust most adults with the tiny delicate tea cups and their matching tiny saucers - but I can still order a full place setting including those from bed bath and beyond at the store then have it ship to my house. My mom wanted to buy me a few more just in case of breakage but I really think I can get by with the 12 I have. Closets...oh don’t get me started on how much room I take up in the master walk in. It’s absurdly huge anyway but I have a lot of things in there and the mister has hanging room allocated so it’s all in the closet except his socks and underwear that are in the two dresser drawers of his very own instead of stuffed into a bin someplace in the house like it was before our move! And he has a big fancy tv! ...Right now is when I want to buy stuff like clothes for warmer weather but most of all I want to buy makeup to replace things that are close to needing to be thrown out. I’m hoping to manage restraint but I know I’m really just hoping to not buy ALL THE THINGS....See MoreFori
