A Little OT: The wonderful world of whacky weather
Comments (6)Hi Poochella! And Plantlady! Poochella you wrote; A good reminder of Mother Nature's fickle ways Jim. And yes indeed she can be! You also asked: Why do people even LIVE in Buffalo NY? It gets hit more times each winter than I can even count. Yes they do get hit quite hard at times with whats known as Lake Effect Snow but Syracuse tops them by far and coming off Lake Ontario rather than Buffalos Lake Erie. I lived in Syracuse for 32 years and now live 6 miles east whereas this 6 miles can make a great difference in amounts of snow that can be gotten living so close to the Thruway as this is considered a boundary line for heavy Lake Effect. Plus after the LE passes we get hit with a Northerly backlash coming off the Ocean as the Low moves away. Heres something to ponder over when thinking about snowfall and Buffalo: Syracuse is known for its snowfall. With 115.6 inches (293.6 cm) average,1. [3] the Syracuse metro area receives more snow on average than any other large city in the United States.[4] Research has even shown that Syracuse is the snowiest large city in the world.[5] Syracuse continually wins the Golden Snowball Award, among Upstate cities. Its record so far is 192.1 inches (487.9 cm). The high snowfall is a result of the fact that the city receives both lake effect and nor'easter snow. Snow most often falls in small (about 1-3 inches/2-8 cm), almost daily doses, over a period of several days. Larger snowfalls do occur from time-to-time, and even more so in the northern suburbs. One notable blizzard was the Blizzard of 1993, during which 42.9 inches (109 cm) fell on the city within 48 hours, with 35.6 inches (90.4 cm) falling within the first 24 hours. Syracuse received more snow than any other city in the country during this storm, which shattered a total of eight local records, including most the snow in a single snowstorm.[6] Ironically, virtually no snow fell during the Blizzard of 2006, where the Catskills and New York City saw over two feet (60 cm) of snow fall in about one day. Poochella! Despite these Winter facts we have some of the most beautiful scenic land and Spring and Summer weather that can be offered, except for 2006. And with the Finger Lakes that are stunning and picturesque that produce some of the best wines in the world, and they are only a few miles away. And Plantlady just as a side note to your saying "Some people say dahlias are hard to grow??? Just throw em on the compost pile - its as easy as that! As I was preparing to put this years tubers to bed, I reached into one of the large boxes to pull out some of the peat moss. I was surprised to see some white growth that was coming from a tuber I overlooked and was the box last in late March or early April. The growth was curly-cued and probably at least 6 feet long. It was hard for me even to believe it could have lasted that many months on its own extraordinary ability to want to survive and grow. The are a lot hardier than most can imagine and then again yet can be so delicate. Thanks for listening! Jim...See Morescream and shout!
Comments (9)Several years ago, there was a poll on Garden Web as to the best iris dealers. Superstition was voted # 1. They really work hard at it like no other iris dealers, and have great customer/dealer communication. They are very careful to check with all quarantine laws, which vary from state to state. Very few dealers abide by all quarantine laws in every state, but they do. Mississippi quarantines for SOD and brown snail. Superstition was the only box I got this year with a SOD letter of compliance and a brown snail certificate, but all of the other boxes got through somehow. I have never gotten or heard of anybody getting a bum box of rhizomes that were all mixed-up from Superstition. That does happen elsewhere, but NEVER in my experience with Rick Tasco and Roger Duncan. Rick just won the Dykes and Roger just won the top AM. They have a reputation to live up to and they do! Comments (12)Babka, Plenty of hosta yawns (pips) here, and some beginning to stretch their arms - though none of them have thrown back the covers to leap out of bed... yet!!! Here's Neptune - an early riser last year too. Irish Luck was new last year, but being a relative of Invincible, it's no surprise that it's also up with the larks. Frank Lloyd Wright doesn't like to linger in bed either! Overall, I'd say that more than half of mine are "stirring." Last year, they were even further ahead at this time - though not by much. I'd prefer them to stay down longer since March can bring "zapping temperatures." A few were definitely impacted last year. We're certainly experiencing plenty of rain recently (doesn't effect the pots which are under cover), and I'll hope for more moisture than we had last spring and early summer when we had very little rain from April onwards (living in Vancouver who'd have ever thought that might be a problem!!!) Your hosta is certainly making a grand entrance! Hope the diamonds will stay sparkling and gleaming for a lengthy time this year - if not forever!!! BC...See More" Work all night on a drink o' rum ! Comments (5)Hi tinael01, glad to hear there's another banana farmer out there trying hard to grow these delicious ( and healthy ) fruits ! Also sorry that you are having so much trouble. I think you are in an area that is north of Tampa,...right ? Thought up there was 9a country,...just goes to show you I still have a lot to learn ! Hope the future is kinder to you. In the 10 yrs I have been puttering around here in my 10a zone ( on the Gulf Coast, just south of Venice ) I could count the nighttime temps under 49 degrees on one hand,..and even then they're fairly brief. Will include here a few pics of my two newest stalks that I had difficulty posting before !Nothing gets me quite as excited ( well almost nothing ) as detecting the 1st glimpse of a new flag leaf. These will take months to ripen, but would be glad to send up a few hands when that happens ! Nothing like the store bought bananas,...NOTHING !!! LOL First Ice Cream stalk, has only 7 handsClose up of 2nd stalk ! MMMMMM.... Second IC stalk, pic taken 3 weeks ago, already 4x the size of 1st stalk and has 10 hands !...See Moredon_in_colorado
