Room of the Day: Breezy Colors Soothe and Relax in a Master Bath
An ocean-inspired palette lends a calm spa feeling to this bathroom designed for a busy couple
“These clients wanted their master bath to be a place that would make them say, ‘Ahhhhhh’ at the end of the day,” interior designer Gail Jamentz says. Until they met her, these busy professionals were saying, “Ack!” Their existing bathroom and the design process were anything but relaxing for them. “They had started to pull together what they liked but found all of the choices overwhelming,” the designer says. She helped them refine the look and combine everything in a cohesive design. The result is a cool blue and white room that’s a sight for sore eyes after long, busy days.
Jamentz’s clients immediately fell in love with this glass mosaic tile, which she used here on the backsplash and as a strong vertical accent in the shower.

The flooring is composed of 12-inch-by-24-inch porcelain tiles. The field tile around the tub and shower stall is a 4-inch-by-16-inch white matte tile that provides a subtle background for the blue accent tile.
“Eliminating the original shower chrome frame helped achieve a visually seamless look,” the designer says. She replaced it with a frameless three-eighths-inch Starphire glass surround, which makes the room feel more open and keeps the view to the beautiful glass mosaic accent clear.

“I couldn’t believe it when I found this hardware. It was a perfect match,” Jamentz says. The drawer handles and pulls have beautiful inset blue glass.

Jamentz was able to reuse the existing tub, updating it with a new Caesarstone deck and a 6-inch-by-14-inch white field tile surround, and adding a pony wall between it and the vanity.
The shower niche tile matches the floor tile, and the surround and shelf are made of the same Caesarstone used elsewhere in the room.

Originally the 1970s bathroom had oak cabinets, a low soffit that supported harsh fluorescent lighting, tile countertops and other dated features. However everything was laid out nicely and flowed well, so Jamentz was able to cut the expense of replumbing.
Now the bathroom has transitional style with a color palette inspired by the nearby ocean. “My clients love these blue-greens, and that was a jumping-off point,” she says. Breezy blue walls and watery blue mosaic tiles give them the kind of room that can lower blood pressure. White vessel sinks and tubular horizontal sconces add sculptural touches, while a deep espresso stain adds contrast. The mirrored doors lead to the walk-in closet and help bounce the light around.
