Warm Winter Folks, has your Spring Sprung too?
About 95% of my potted hostas have emerged and about 1/2 are unfurling. What a wonderful sight for sore eyes. I have my fingers crossed that they will do well this year, however, because they came up seemingly strong last Spring, then several pooped out after a month or 6 weeks due to leaf and root mealy bugs and rot. Probably one of my worst years with hostas (just like BK, having problems that hadn't happened in the previous 10 years!)I did everything I could before they went dormant last November and am hoping all the bleach baths, repotting, soil drenches etc. did some good.
Almost gave up, but now with fresh beautiful leaves unfurling, I'm in love again, and renewed. Here is my Diamonds Are Forever today.

Comments (10)Yes, I'd definitely say spring has sprung. Not that we should overlook any cold sensitive plants, but for the most part, I think we're on our way. Just looking around, there is a sense of the natural world waking up (trees greening, the sun higher up, warmer temps. more bug activity). I always have a mixture of plants in containers and in a garden bed. I still move plants indoors on nights below 50s, but otherwise, the containers are at full capacity. The garden bed is sort of on hold for a couple of more weeks, but I'm planning on the future arrangement now. Comments (4)Greetings from WARM up north! today we are expecting a high of 20 - or 68 degrees, don't you just hate metric, yesterday when i was in a&p i got lunch meat and it went like this 5 slices of cdn swiss cheese, 1.50 shaved cooked ham, 3.00 of oven roast turkey breast and 1.00 of 3 other lunch meats! - kid looked at me and i said hey, i'm too old for this metric stuff. anyways i talked to sandra and cheryl (my friend) for about 10 minutes she's doing fine and looks great as always, here me with greasy hair in a pony. i actually have started a new quilt, guess i'm out of my funk but i'm so tired all the time. and i'm glad this is our long weekend and since dd is trilled about this new computer i don't think she'll be wanting to go out anywhere. i have a ton of veg. seeds and flower seeds and since this is the weekend to plant i don't really know if i should because of the cold weather funny how things work out -- may long weekend - plant seeds, and you can't wear white shoes or purses before then, who made that rule i wonder. love the new computer, the screen is huge - 17 inch, dd is going to show me how to use msn or whatever, so maybe we can chat live, i'll let you know if i'm a good student. (oh, radio just said it was 11 out - 52 degrees). baby Matthew will be 22 on Monday - can't believe it, where did the time go? if i could have done anything different raising him, i don't think i'd change anything, well maybe, i just wish he'd learn to drive! i will admit I THINK WE have great kids, oh well i won't get sappy now. al has had 2 pains in his shoulder and has had 3 sprays of nitro already today, i'm hoping it's the weather, but last night he had trouble getting up from a laying position and we had to help him get up, so i think i better stay close to him today. dd is skipping last period of school this afternoon - i know because i'm picking her up, she says the classes are getting smaller and smaller each day, i guess the kids know they won't be passing so why bother going, one class only had 5 in it yesterday. well it's time to give insulin, if you're going out there and it's your long weekend too, please, please drive carefully! debbie...See MoreAt Last- Spring has sprung

Comments (16)The 6 week rule is generally the rule I tend to keep in mind in other areas where I am waiting for brownout or at least the minimum time I can cut the foliage out. Granted the crocus bulb is so small....I'm sure it will be fine cutting them, since I have cut other bulbs while in the green. Mine are planted in flower beds so I just leave brown out naturally since they arean't in my way of other plantings. I gave the lawn a wake up cut the other day. Let me see how long it will get if I leave it alone for a month and a half to decide......never have done the crocus field cause I know I am generally out before then cutting the turf. And MyBrownThumb made a good point which I wasn't even looking at - the height of Cut , may not even affect the foliage to some degree...See More

Plenty of hosta yawns (pips) here, and some beginning to stretch their arms - though none of them have thrown back the covers to leap out of bed... yet!!!
Here's Neptune - an early riser last year too.
Irish Luck was new last year, but being a relative of Invincible, it's no surprise that it's also up with the larks.
Frank Lloyd Wright doesn't like to linger in bed either!
Overall, I'd say that more than half of mine are "stirring."
Last year, they were even further ahead at this time - though not by much. I'd prefer them to stay down longer since March can bring "zapping temperatures." A few were definitely impacted last year.
We're certainly experiencing plenty of rain recently (doesn't effect the pots which are under cover), and I'll hope for more moisture than we had last spring and early summer when we had very little rain from April onwards (living in Vancouver who'd have ever thought that might be a problem!!!)
Your hosta is certainly making a grand entrance! Hope the diamonds will stay sparkling and gleaming for a lengthy time this year - if not forever!!!
