Planning a spring garden..favorite daffs, and other spring bulbs?
Comments (42)Hi Adam and everyone, Hmm. So it was not just me having little success with Minnow. Someone had problem with his Thalia earlier this year. I forgot where he got it from. Sun Disc/Sundisc didn't live long for me either. Just too crowded in my garden. Craigford is a mid season bloomer. Much earlier than Geranium. Looks almost like Geranium. Smells good too. re Leucojum. LOL. Amanda is right. Way too many leaves. Stay green longer than narcissi too. :-P But I love them. Planted only 25 the first year. Loved it so much I added 100 the next year. A mistake, because they multiply like rabbits. :-) I suggest that you plant no more than 25-30 and quite far apart, say 2' to give them room to increase. I like mine right in front of the border between Alchemilla mollis so I can admire its delicate beauty and Alchemilla can hide the Leucojum later in the season. Since it is white, it goes well with everything. I have clay soil. I learned that large size narcissi don't mind it one bit, but miniatures don't like it at all. I planted a couple hundred of N. bulbocodium on my lawn that had not really been cultivated hoping to get a drift of it. Didn't work. Only one bloomed then totally disappeared. Nell's reading suggestion is good. My soil is heavy clay. I have amended it over the years. In fact, I add leaves in the planting hole as I go. Here is what I actually do when I plant blulbs: Dig a deep hole, place a handfull of leaves and a pinch of bone meal at the bottom- a bit of soil-large bulb-a bit of soil & bone meal-a handful of leaves-a bit of soil with bone meal-minor or small bulb-soil-leaves-soil-another bulb-soil-leaves and a bit of soil. I call it composting in situ. LOL. My own invention. Works like charm. My garden beds is quite loamy now. Still rather heavy, though. I may plant 2 or 3 bulbs in one hole, depending on what I have. When I have mulch and/or compost I dump the whole thing on top of the beds whenever I clean them up....See MoreIdyll #374 - Spring has Sprung!
Comments (102)Power out for 12+ hours yesterday thanks to a cheap neighbor who could have been responsible for a death when that severely leaning 4 ft diameter tree finally fell on the lines and the road. 18 trucks, red, white and yellow, on our tiny road and we were not allowed out until 8PM. I called the power company and told them I would be happy to file affadavit that this was entirely avoidable. Most of us work from home here so much money lost on account of these cheap home owners in addition to the (my estimate) minimum 30K spent by power company and highway department to clean up the mess, replace 2 poles and wire on entire street to get utilities back in here. There are burn marks and holes in the street and the power company was here all day too. Grumble grumble. Just so completely avoidable! Chelone, nope, greys are very prone to osteosarcoma but don't have ACL troubles. I think I've read some ACL problems are caused by weight, and greys don't have weight problems. Others caused by gymnastics the dogs bodies aren't built for. Greys just run, they don't tumble or wrestle. Kathy, you must be a pro at implants by now :) I had 3 a few years ago and 1000mg ibuprofren and a good nights sleep got me through them one at a time. But then I do have a tendency not to remember pain. Katie's cart came today. She hates it. I've never seen Ms. Confidence tuck her tail and it was practically under her chin. She wouldn't move even for a hot dog. We'll try again tomorrow and maybe I'll coat the thing in peanut butter. Time for doggie supper and then I need to find something to eat too....See MoreSpring has sprung!! (pic heavy)
Comments (44)Viktoria, I wish I could say they were Angelique but they are Foxtrot. I plan on ordering some Angelique this fall because they look gorgeous. I love the pink, purple and white color scheme too. I'm getting to where I like just about any kind of color scheme I believe. lol! Yes I would rather you guys drool than the deer. They are the dangest creatures. I found one rose bush in the middle of about twenty others that something has striped every new bud off of. grrrrrr..... I sprayed some LF last night since the new growth is coming on like gangbusters in hopes of keeping the deer at bay. I know what you mean about the squirrels. I like the idea of trying to trap them. I may have to look into that. The squirrels get in my beds and dig little holes everywhere and pull plants straight out of my pots. Yes they are cute little creatures but enuf is enuf!!! Trailrunner, Have you ever tried to leave them in the ground? I planted the majority of mine this past fall but have planted some before that have returned. Plus you could make sure you look for ones that are known to return year after year. I would get aggravated though with the leaves during the summer trying to leave them as long as possible for next years blooms and would always end up cutting them back toooo soon. I have mellowed some and hope I can make myself leave them this time since I planted so many and plan to plant some annuals around them to help cover the leaves up some. Hi mnswgal, So glad the snow has begun to melt. Those daffs and crocus will all be open before you know it. Thanks you all for your nice comments. I'm so ready to plant more tulips and spring blooming bulbs for next year. It just never ends does it!!! Thanks again, Judy...See MoreSpring has finally sprung!!
Comments (4)Greetings from WARM up north! today we are expecting a high of 20 - or 68 degrees, don't you just hate metric, yesterday when i was in a&p i got lunch meat and it went like this 5 slices of cdn swiss cheese, 1.50 shaved cooked ham, 3.00 of oven roast turkey breast and 1.00 of 3 other lunch meats! - kid looked at me and i said hey, i'm too old for this metric stuff. anyways i talked to sandra and cheryl (my friend) for about 10 minutes she's doing fine and looks great as always, here me with greasy hair in a pony. i actually have started a new quilt, guess i'm out of my funk but i'm so tired all the time. and i'm glad this is our long weekend and since dd is trilled about this new computer i don't think she'll be wanting to go out anywhere. i have a ton of veg. seeds and flower seeds and since this is the weekend to plant i don't really know if i should because of the cold weather funny how things work out -- may long weekend - plant seeds, and you can't wear white shoes or purses before then, who made that rule i wonder. love the new computer, the screen is huge - 17 inch, dd is going to show me how to use msn or whatever, so maybe we can chat live, i'll let you know if i'm a good student. (oh, radio just said it was 11 out - 52 degrees). baby Matthew will be 22 on Monday - can't believe it, where did the time go? if i could have done anything different raising him, i don't think i'd change anything, well maybe, i just wish he'd learn to drive! i will admit I THINK WE have great kids, oh well i won't get sappy now. al has had 2 pains in his shoulder and has had 3 sprays of nitro already today, i'm hoping it's the weather, but last night he had trouble getting up from a laying position and we had to help him get up, so i think i better stay close to him today. dd is skipping last period of school this afternoon - i know because i'm picking her up, she says the classes are getting smaller and smaller each day, i guess the kids know they won't be passing so why bother going, one class only had 5 in it yesterday. well it's time to give insulin, if you're going out there and it's your long weekend too, please, please drive carefully! debbie...See Morefloral_uk z.8/9 SW UK
