If Downton Abbey took place entirely on Facebook
Comments (21)I think I will start watching it without the sound. It is still gorgeous but it sure has become dumb. And i never like a plot twist that was driven by contracts. It has always been about Mary and Matthew, and without tension it does not work. I also think that Fellowes was very self-indulgent with the Barrows story line. We get it. Sexual orientation doesn't matter. It's 2013, we know this. It was totally unrealistic to write a storyline where the staff and family were so tolerant and understanding in the environment where homosexuality was illegal! I think he made an improbable story line for the era, to make a point in 2013. It did not ring true. Plus I think acting like it was tolerated then actually does a disservice! How vulnerable are people whose relationships court criminality? The biggest problem with the show is that requited love (MnM) is boring. "l love you more each passing day"? Is that Fellowes, or Hallmark?...See MoreI never have liked that Downton Abbey kitchen...
Comments (29)And what happened to those babies? Last week the nanny got fired and then then babies just disappeared? It's starting to feel like an English soap opera for me now as opposed to the story of the family with some plot development. Too many characters flipping in/out each week. But that's just my take. There's lots to love about the show. I just hope they turn it around a bit and slow it back down to it's original flavor. Love the worktable in the kitchen and as someone else noted, the introduction of various electrical appliances. Mrs Patmore is hilarious. I think this season is getting on towards end of the '20's judging by the costumes, speak-easys, and the ominous pull of Germany for Edith's boyfriend to get his divorce. My prediction is that he'll get stuck there when Hitler rises...or something to that effect....See MoreDid anyone else see Downton Abbey?
Comments (124)Vee, sorry, I only just noticed your post to me about Death Comes to Pemberley. I don't watch Downton Abbey so haven't been following this thread. I can't remember what I said about the book either but the TV show looks interesting and I shall see if I can get an advance DVD download as I don't know when it will be shown here or it may have been on Foxtel satellite which I don't have. I don't get the time to watch everything I'd like on "Free to air" as it is! I have heaps of programs that sit in the recorder.......See MoreAnti-Climatic End to Downton Abbey's Final Season
Comments (17)Oh, I forgot to mention Moseley! What a surprise from that one! My favorite scenes of him are his drunken solo dancing at the Scottish castle over Christmas :-) But he turned out all right, didnt he? i thought Edith would be well and truly set by the end of that last episode but now I am thinking she will be the only really modern character who makes her own way (unless Julian Fellowes just can't resist what he obviously sees as a happy ending). Rosamund was another character who improved vastly over time. either McGovern's acting improved over the series or I got used to it....INitially she sounded like she had pebbles in her mouth and was reading. Maybe a more critical ear would think she still is, but I guess I lost all expectations for her. Beagles, there was actually a line in one of the episodes when a policeman came to Downton and someone remarked that finally, he hadn't come to arrest one of the Bateses, or words to that effect. IMO that was the writers poking a bit of fun at their own over contrived plots!...See More- 10 years ago
