How much cooling does a ceiling fan provide for sleeping?

We don't have A/C. Our first floor stays cool in summer but the second floor can be 10 degrees warmer on a hot day, about 78 degrees at bedtime. The two main upstairs bedrooms get a cross-breeze, but the guest bedroom stays warm until very late at night. Should I expect the ceiling fan to cool as much as a small fan on the nightstand? That's enough air circulation to make it bearable for falling asleep, then the fan is turned off when overnight temps drop. But it's not ideal for sleeping--it's loud and you can never get the breeze perfect. I don't want to go to the expense of an electrician adding a junction box for a ceiling fan only to find out I don't like the cooling it provides. I've only slept under a ceiling fan once about ten years ago.

As for sizing, the bedroom is 11 x 11' with an 8' ceiling. I'm thinking of this Minka-Aire flush mount in the 44". It seems large for a bedroom that small but that's what the sizing charts suggest. This one might be the 26" version.

Thanks!
