Outdoor Ceiling Fans? Or Wall Mounted Fans? Sagging Fan Blades...

My porch ceiling is 9' high. Would I be better off installing oscillating wall fans (and have ceiling pendants for lighting) or just stick with ceiling fans?

If I do ceiling fans, what is the best way to prevent the blades from sagging over time? Or is that inevitable with the southern heat/humidity?

You can do a ceiling fan, Be sure you get one that is made to be used outdoor. To avoid sagging blades (This happens mostly when you use one that is supposed to be indoor only) you can look for one with METAL blades.

I would not recommend fans with metal blades, they will rust and typically require ceilings over 10 feet because they are not considered safe in residential applications. You are best off with fans that have special UV protective ABS plastic blades or thicker solid wood blades that are rated for outdoor wet or damp locations. Wet rated fans have the highest tolerance for abuse from the elements and are the best choice, but a covered porch like yours can use a damp rated or wet rated fan.

Also, in outdoor locations it is critical to consider the amount of airflow that the fan produces because open outdoor locations do not allow the air to escape on the sides and the breeze you feel from a fan is a lot less than what you feel in an enclosed area indoors. So you need more powerful fans than those listed above. The Donaire fan recommended below has a wind speed factor of about 3.8 MPH, which is over 50% more breeze than the Westinghouse fan above.

The ultimate outdoor fan is made of marine grade 316 stainless steel and has ABS blades. It is the Donaire by Matthews Fan Company and is available in brushed nickel or bronze stainless steel.

Thanks for your replies and useful information. The typical box fans available locally are rounded ones, so I would have to had padded/filled in around them too. And I came across some more information about air stratification which got me to thinking about air flow, humidity and venting- some people have vents opening in the roof to release the hot air. In contradiction I've read turbine ventilators do remove humidity and are installed and used to not only remove heat in summer but to remove moisture from under the roof/ceiling or in attics. I know some one who uses whirly birds/turbine ventilators though they have said height is really important for them to be effective. So I ended up not going with fans for exhausting air on the opposite end wall to the cooler and instead got a 30cm turbine ventilator whirly gig thing. I also found a few more exhaust fans [for bathrooms, etc] and got one [25cm AUS $49.00. that will fit under the whirly, extracting air keeping the turbine spinning. The exhaust fan is not on a thermostat but I figure I could just turn it off and maybe cover it in winter to stop heat escaping. I will be placing it in/on on the roof nearer towards the highest point where hot air should rise to. I don't know how effective it will be but with misting under the benches, the evaporative cooler and trickling water down the shadecloth/matting against the fence I'd be happy if it only reduced temps just a few degrees. Where my masies, dracs, pleuros, oncids, miltonias etc are at the moment is a mucher small potting shed, which I kept totally closed up last summer but I did set up a hose in there to release a small spray of mist [slightly dripping] and have the evaporate cooler in there [+ fan inside circulating air around]. Despite some days with temps going past 35 degrees celcius I didn't lose or have any plants visibly suffer or have masie leaf drop except for one plant that was a newbie. I think it was keeping the humidity up around 80-90% [+ shading] that helped. My main concern really has been about ondontoglossums and hybrids with the cooler/cold ones like crispum, I have been told and read too that they do better if temps can be kept lower in Summer. I will post back later on how it works out and put some pics of my turbine/exhaust fan up in my Pleurothallidinae and Oncidiinae Grow House photobucket folder. Damian. We have a Matthews Fan Company Vent-Bettina in our kitchen (mounted between the kitchen and LR--formerly our DR). Ours is the teak blade option, rather than the metal blades with "cage" version (available both ways), but I would imagine they function the same way. One big difference, obviously, is how it looks. We liked it's "funky" and slightly different look--the perfect bit of "bling" for our kitchen reno! Other difference, is how it moves the air. Typical ceiling fan moves in one plane, so the air is circulated either upward or downward in a horizantal, circular motion. With the gyroscopic fans, the fan blades are moving in a vertical plane. while the fan's "body" is rotating horizontally (clockwise), *Note, the fan blades/heads are motorized, while the body is not. The motion of the blades, head position/angle drive the fan's "body" rotation. The air is being moved by the spinning fan blades, and is circulated throughout the space by the rotation of the entire unit. The end result is pretty much the same with both types of fans (air is being moved!), though in our application, this type of fan has the added benefit of visually "serving" both rooms. I would say it might have a bit of an edge (over a conventional fan) cooling our two adjacent spaces because of its design. We did not set up our old fan in the kitchen post-reno (after opening up the wall between the two rooms), so I don't have a true comparison. Here is a link that might be useful: Matthews Fan Co. pozj, I have a TG fir ceiling, ipe on all other areas, with a ceiling fan installed. As you can tell from the photo, I am still in the construction phase. Agreeing with Bossy and with Walnutcreek. Yep, my house looks messy with mud dauber nests around the front door, but I do clean them off when the young ones have emerged ... :-) And yes, a mud dauber nest can get a little heavy and would throw off the balance of the blades so I would certainly remove it. Interestingly, paper wasps built a nest on the blade tip of my Mom's covered patio ceiling fan. She always kept it set on a slow speed and when she turned it on whatever wasps that were on the nest held on for dear life going around and around with the fan, but when it was turned off their life continued as usual. Being interrupted like that their nest never got very big, and since they didn't bother anyone either Mom just left it. It wasn't heavy enough to throw off the balance. We just laughed about what they must be 'thinking' when their nest became a merry-go-round.

You should purchase outdoor rated ceiling fans. These are non rust guarantee and have a mix and match motor and blade option. The blades are real wood that are suitable for outdoor humid climates.

Interesting feed. I did not know that metal-blade fans can’t be used in residential applications until I read it here. I was just looking at some of the metal-blade fans for a covered patio application in the desert SW.
I can’t tell you how many droopy wooden-bladed patio ceiling fans I’ve seen in the Palm Springs, CA, area.
Which type of fan is recommended for a mostly a hot and dry climate?
