Weeping cherry tree turning brown

My weeping cherry, purchased from the local botanical gardens and planted in May, is turning brown. Some of the leaves are curling but not all. This has just happened over the last week. Posting photo with this thread. I live in zone 7b. The tree was professionally planted, soil seems to drain well as I live on the top of a hill, and I don't see any insects. We did have a hail storm recently, so I'm wondering if the tree could be in some sort of shock. Please help!

We live in Boise, Idaho. Zone 6B. I should have mentioned that we had a horrifying cold snap in November that devastated the area, and much of the damage is only now being realized. There have been quite a few news stories just in the past week about all of the damage done to vineyards, public parks and private property. On November 6, it reached a high of 69 degrees. On November 13-14 we got about 6" of snow and on November 15, the overnight low was 1 degree. The daytime highs didn't get back above freezing until November 21, with single digit overnight lows that entire week. So we went from warm fall weather to permafrost in about 9 days. Surprisingly, our hydrangeas and many other delicate trees and shrubs weren't even fazed. But this one tree - probably our favorite tree in the yard - was just decimated.

Has your tree been getting enough water? If you recently dug up the tree and replanted it, that could likely have compromised its root system and made it difficult for the tree to uptake adequate water, even if the soil is soaking wet. New leaflets turning brown often means the plant either does not have adequate water or vigor to sustain their continued growth.

It's probably the heat. Cherries don't do well in the heat. It should start to get better by the end of September if you keep the tree consistently watered. If you really wanted to go out of your way to tend to the tree, you could mist the leaves during the middle of the day (sometime between 12:00 to 4:00 ). I've even heard some people have very lightly sprayed their trees with mineral oil, or lightly rubbed some petroleum jelly onto the leaves, to help keep them from drying out. It's the height of summer right now, and a little browning is to be expected. San Jose has clearer skies than San Francisco, so less protection from the sun. In short, what you are seeing is perfectly normal for the climate you are in. There's a reason most commercial cherry orchards are based in Michigan and Eastern Washington. Also, in San Jose (all the paved surfaces in the surrounding area has an effect on temperature) it's quite likely your kwanzan trees are not getting quite the degree of winter chill that they would prefer. This results in slightly reduced vigor, and that is also associated with browning of the leaf tips. Your tree should fair better in future years when the roots have become more established (and they can provide a more adequate water supply to the leaves).

because yellowing of leaves is usually a bad sign at this time of the year ==>>> not really ... its natures way as the plant shuts down for fall ... weather of course can complicate how early that happens ... and i am presuming we are talking about deciduous trees ... regardless ... there isnt much you should be doing in fall .. surely not adding any ferts, as the tree starts slowing down ... maybe some water .. i guess i dont understand your premise.. of what exactly you think you should be doing if the leaves turn color???? ken

looks dead [if its supposed to be a green tree ... talk to your seller/installer ...

see link about watering and soil type.. give us some facts on both ... if you want to delve into it all

little more specificity on where you are.. and ambient weather since planting ...

wait a minute ... coffee clicked in.. and i focused a bit better ... is it a red leafed tree.. and you are only discussing the brown ... installation or shipping injury ... but we still must discuss proper watering ...

reminds me a lot of my weeping fagus.. beech ...?????? .. i coulndt google up a red leafed weeping cherry.. im so confused ... lol

It's a green leafed tree. Went from green to brown in a week. The leaves are not dry and are still green on the inside... Not one has fallen. The tree is also green right below the bark so I don't think it's dead (yet). It's been in the ground for 3 months with no issue. Put on new growth and all. I water using a slow trickle but we have had a severe drought over the last two weeks. Not sure about soil type... Seems a little sandy but otherwise rich.

When end I clicked on the duplicate post it gave me a delete option.

It's been in the ground for 3 months with no issue.

=>> ohhh.. its got some issues.. lol ...

trees live and die in slow motion ... so its definitely had issues in excess of 3 months ...

could have been when they dug it out of the field.. the shipping from grower to seller.. the install.. the followup .. etc ...

talk with your seller and your installer ... if they replace it.. ask to wash off the roots ... and lets see if the root mass was badly damaged in digging for sale ...

all you can really do.. is water it properly ... and hope for the best .. its stressed ...not hungry.. fert is not an answer ...
