Back in the 70's I remember the ice maker in our standard refrigerator/freezer making essentially cylindrical ice cubes. If I remember right it had 5 molds that filled with water and the bottom of the mold would move up to push the ice cubes up and then a rake would sweep them off an into the bin. I would love to find one of these if anyone knows where to find one. I know that is what we had, but I have asked many people and nobody can even remember anything like that. As a sanity check can someone else confirm? I have searched the internet and cannot find anything at all. Thanks.

I haven't had experience with Leibherr but I can tell you from experience that Sub-Zero service has been nothing but incredible. US based 24/7 customer service with one day responses on service appointments (in my area at least). I would assume the fixed water connection is a considerably better option. That is what I have, and if I had to fill a tank I wouldn't have nearly enough ice. I think both SZ and Leibherr come with filters for the water if that is an issue for you. Hopefully you can get some more responses, but my money is sticking with SZ for fridges in the future. I love mine.

Hi! Pretty old string but one of the best videos explaining the Liebherr ice maker. Mine 99 cent tray cracked at the base where the rotor motor is located - and really fell down in the big box collecting ice. A new tray cost nearly 100 Euro! Grrrrr! First of all: one does not need to move/loosen the motor, because the tray is elastic and can be forced out of the inner base by just bending the tray. Secondly, the tray is delivered with a temperature sensor located under a plastic shielding with 3 hooks going via about 15 cm cord to a connector intended to connect behind the motor. Do not try to dismantle the motor. Use the old temperature sensor and cord still connected to the motor and absolutely good enough to reuse. In stead disconnect the three hooks with a polygrip squeezing the triangular part together at the base and thus unhooking. Then align the old cord and sensor where the old was, put the styren-piece on top and then hook the three hooks up securing the sensor to the bottom of the tray. Place the base end (sensor part of tray) at the motor fitting and squeeze the other end into its hole. I did take the ice maker out to see how the machine works, and reconnected before I got the 100 Euro tray and diddn´t have to take the machine out again - it is possible to change the tray without taking the ice maker out of the freezer. Eeewwww, Legionnaires disease! That is scary. I'm hoping for something more likely, but I will keep that possibility in the back of my mind. It's a U-Line BI1215, which creates crescent shaped ice "cubes." It's brand new so I was instructed to toss the first several batches. We are waaayyy beyond the first few batches, four days of batches to be honest. I'd expect the newness to be gone, wouldn't you? I am not using it since it smells and tastes so icky. My best description is a strong plastic-y smell and taste. (I haven't swallowed any, just tasted melted "cubes") It was connected using a braided water line supply kit, hooked to my sink water line. I called U-Line and spoke with a person who suggested putting vinegar in the ice tray and then trying the Ice Machine Cleaning packet if the vinegar doesn't work. I tried the vinegar and now the ice is really gross. I will have to wait for the cleaner to arrive. Until then, has anyone else had a similar problem? What was the cause? And the solution? Thank goodness my fridge icemaker still works. It's a typical blisteringly hot summer here.
