If it hasn't been in the ground for too long, transplant right after it finishes blooming. If it is well established and has been in the ground for a number of years, good luck :-)) I've not seen many vines with such a massive and prodigious root system as an established Clematis armandii. Took me the better part of a day to dig one out when a fence and gate had to be moved. Katie, I may be single minded in this opinion but I always understood transplanting to mean to move from one location in ground to another. Moving from a nursery container into the ground is just planting :-) Is this what you meant sammy?

Ok girls...as you know they say verbalizing your addiction is supposedly the first step to recovery..BUT..this is one addiction that I refuse to recover from..until they pry that clematis bloom from my dead and cold fingers..LOL..hmm..sorta mellow dramatic but that's me ..what the heck..OK..I planted 15 this Spring in my "Miguel Memorial" garden..Veronica's choice with my climbing rosa "Lavendar Lassie" another one (which eludes my mind at the moment..gezzzz..hates when that happens..drawing a blank) with my Climbing rosa "Tess of the d'Urbenvilles" Two Clematis "Florida" behind my birdbath...Two Clematis with Climbing rosa "Pinata" 4 clematis back behind my two rosa "Cinco de Mayo" (which I just planted this Spring..hey yall..I do plant tons of Non-clematis plants each year!)and I have 6 potted up waiting to get more mature in my retaining gardens!! (3 of those are "Cassis") I planted clematis "Ashva" under my Loquat Tree with two others that were already there! ..this doesn't include "whatever" I get when the fall sales begin..I would honest divulge that but I can't forsee an upcoming addictional choice..but it will most probably be "those" which I've had a hankering for and don't have..grrrr..ok let me add that up for "part of this year" since I can't add my fall orders yet..hmmm..15+2+2+4+6=29? gezzz...I shoulda just agreed with you Janet and compted to 25 a year..LOL..oh well my motto is "You only Live ONCE"...thanks girls for helping me "Face" my addiction..believe it or not it put a face to my fun BUT it still doesn't equal up to what dear hubby has spent this year on his addictions..LOL...Jeanne

Hi janetpetiole, You didn't offend me at all. I just like my junipers. They have sentimental value. I agree, that I war with the aesthetic and "botanist" side of me. Aesthetically I shouldn't have a jungle of specimen plants, but the part of me who wants to cram in at least one of every interesting species wins. The pictures make the junipers seem more prominent than they are as the house seems small/junipers seems large. I will get out there and do the yearly trim at least though waiting until fall would be wiser of me I guess. There is a beautiful dark purple Clematis in the neighborhood so I'll have to walk by and see exactly what they've done. I think they have big support that you don't see as it's buried under a mound of Clematis. I'm so glad I posted and asked this question and you and lalalandi answered else I would have made a big mistake planting to grow on the short bushes. Thanks!

Hi Lily!! I decided to jump over here to see if I could find any more clematis that I just had to have... Shaking my head and wondering why. I have enough ideas already! I just moved a few clematis and planted new ones in temps in the low to high 90's the past couple of weeks and will get three more and plant them this week. I just made sure I moved as much dirt with them as possible. Dug the hole that I was moving them to first. And watered well when they were moved. Then I shaded them with garden quilt and copper pipe trellises for at least a week to 10 days. They did just fine, but they were newly planted this year and it was pretty easy to root them up. I think ideally, I would wait until spring. But I am not a patient person, so I just did it and am glad I did. I have not had experience with moving mature clematis, so maybe someone with more experience will help you out with that. Sure enjoy your posts on the Roses forum! Rebecca
