Moving Clematis Roguchi
Comments (2)I've decided Roguchi is the toughest of them all. Some workman putting in a new foundation for my garage managed to drive over Roguchi about a dozen time with their heavy equipment. This was during the hot mid-summer, and I couldn't really water the poor plant even for several weeks. After the workman finished, I gave the plant a deep watering, and about a week later decided to move it to a better spot. Remember, this was during hot mid-summer. I figured the plant was a goner anyway, so what the heck--though I did try to keep a close eye on its water needs. Not only did Roguchi survive all that abuse, but this year it is absolutely thriving in its new home. I have a great deal of respect for the endurance of Roguchi! Comments (5)Even just a 3 year old plant has a surprisingly massive and dense root system. Cut the vines back to about 8-12". Dig the root ball as big and deeply as possible, but even and 18x18 inch rootball is going to be difficult to manage. It has to be small enough that it can be moved and replanted without too much fuss. I recommend having a male helper if you can. It takes a lot to lift the root ball out if the ground. I wouldn't worry about moving it though, Clematis are fairly tough and forgiving plants. I have dropped rootballs, and soil has fallen away, but they all seem to respond well once they have a chance to settle in. It could take a year or two. At least that has been my experience. I've had clematis that do even better following a move as it gets their root ball shaken up a bit. :)...See MoreMoving a clematis

Comments (2)Rainyday, I was in the same position last summer. I dug my 'Proteus' and divided it in the middle of summer with no ill effects, all three pieces were replanted and are doing well. I see you are zone 8 do you have a mild winter, if not I'd wait till spring. Annette Here is a link that might be useful: Moving a mature Clematis...See More- 6 years ago
