Hi PC2, I don't knock myself out getting cole transplants out in my gardens early. It really depends on your climate. With cloudy, cool Springs - even cool-season crops won't grow much here until late May. Leggy root-bound broccoli and such, isn't so great to set out. They grow quickly indoors so with an April 21st last frost date and not much sun and warmth for a month after that, I'm starting them today. Something quick in the genre is dwarf bok choy. I've even moved transplants into the garden under plastic by now but that hasn't worked very well (plastic collapsed under snow and/or heavy frost damaged the plants thru the plastic). Bok choy will give us nice "cabbage" greens by the 1st of May with putting transplants under plastic in early April. My garden soil is so wet right now, I can't cultivate for another couple of weeks. That will certainly be early enuf to plant some spinach & lettuce. I'll let my soil thermometer be my guide. Heck, it takes more than 3 weeks for spinach to germinate at 41°F and more than a week longer for them to emerge. I may as well wait 3 weeks when it will take them only a week to pop up. Peas will go in about that time, or later. The seed from those nice sweet varieties I like to grow, has rotted in the ground rather than germinate with soil temps below 45°. . . . . just depends on your Spring climate & soil temperatures. No, it will be fine. Especially if you're having weather like we're having in SE Michigan (struggling to get out of the 60s). If you do expect a hot stretch, just give the plant a little TLC - make sure it has enough water, and perhaps put a bottomless pot or some other contraption around it to shield it from direct sun and wind for a few days. :0)

Having dug out a mature armandii myself, I know firsthand what kind of ordeal that was! These vines develop huge root systems and getting enough of the root system to establish new growth when transplanting is hard to do. Plus, I am a little confused about what the vine looks like after pruning. Is there any foliage on the vine or is it all bare wood? The last concern is the time of year you are attempting this project - now is the least desirable time. While anything is possible with a healthy clemmie, I'd say you are looking at low odds for this transplant. The only other thing I might suggest is to dose it with a liquid root stimulator.......and keep your fingers crossed :-))

No you don't have to prune your pruning group 2's right now..Enjoy those blooms and after it is over blooming then you can prune to induce more vines to emerge from the soil..hopefully..you have already hard pruned your pruning group 3's as they will bloom later on in the season on the new vines they produce...Jeanne
