Comments (6)Mrs. BR Cant is supposed to do very well here, and I have several on their own roots that look extremely promising. Her root system is massive. All are planted near concrete (about 6 ft. away), which is supposed to help keep any nematode populations down. It can be almost impossible to find any OGR on fortuniana, so I am planting what I want own root, and if they ever start faltering, I will either get cuttings custom grafted, or learn to do it myself. There are people that have had success with some of them on their own roots. Depends on what's going on in your yard. I've never had any issues with my lawn or any of my other shrubs, so maybe that's a good sign....See MoreWhat am I doing wrong when I separate??
Comments (3)Tracy - just to add a bit - A. some plants are designed to sucker - they are trailers and should be grown multicrowned B. Some plants have the tendency to sucker when they are young - and if with a help of Fred's technique you keep removing the suckers as early as possible until they mature - you are home free. C. Some plants will sucker in your conditions no matter what - pass them to somebody else - very possibly they will behave better. D. All plants sucker when stressed - exactly as Fred explained. Try to baby them a bit - and if it doesn't help - you can call them category C - and get rid of them. TGIF Irina...See MoreWhat am I doing wrong???
Comments (13)"For pruning, sounds like it's best done in late spring, before the blooms start to form in July/August." It's never a good idea to suggest specific timing for pruning Hydrangea macrophylla - when they bloom is very much dependent on where one is located. In more northern locations, these are mid to late summer bloomers so pruning in late spring would only serve to remove the current season's flower buds. It is better to focus on a specific pruning method. Ideally, no pruning other than deadheading old flowerheads and removing deadwood is really required, provided the plant is sited where it can be allowed to achieve its natural size. If a reduction in size is required, one can either do a wholesale cutting back to a desired size in early spring as new growth becomes apparent and forfeit a bloom season or undertake rejuvenation pruning - cutting a third of the stems back to to the plant base in each of three years. This is actually the recommended method, as it encourages new, vigorous stem growth from the root crown as well maintaining most of the seasonal bloom potential....See Morebunkfree_4a_canada
