Yes, my old ND did that too, and I have a new bush of Awakening (a sport of ND) which does the same thing. HMF says it only blooms on old wood, but then on the same page HMF says "it seems to flower best on old wood" - a HUGE difference! My baby A is blooming merrily on all of its new wood.

Whew! I thought maybe I didn't know the difference between old and new wood, but these are barely green canes! I wonder what is meant by the old wood thing. I've always been so careful not to prune new wood and destroy this years blooms.

I just read the HMF: it says it can be grown in a container!!! That would be some huge container judging by the roots I moved this Spring. :)

My Awakening is a baby, but my SIL has one rooted from the same mother plant, and it is 6 feet wide by 5 feet tall and still growing and planning on taking over LOTS of more space! My old ND got 8 ft tall by 5 feet wide. I think they meant that if you want to constantly prune it, and re-pot it every few years after you have trimmed its roots, you could keep it in a container. Some folks like to fuss with large roses that much to keep them smaller, but not me!

I personally can NOT imagine keeping New Dawn in a container for any length of time...unless you're talking about a house-sized trans-oceanic shipping container. You're talking about a LOT of pruning (top and roots), and a LOT of re-potting, annnnnnnnnd...a lot of open wounds, lol.

By the way, my ND blooms on old and new wood, but especially well on new laterals FROM old wood. I lightly prune cane tips when I deadhead the first flush, and she responds by producing more laterals, which bloom about six weeks later.

fig, I'm with you on the trans-oceanic sized shipping container! I too get the laterals from the old wood, but never paid enough attention to new canes. After the big transplanting this Spring, I'm noticing every shoot. The move seems to have re-invigorated the two 80yr old plants and the three new rootings are going crazy! I'll take a pic of the new canes with perfectly lovely buds at their tips tomorrow

I have approached their deadheading somewhat differently this year and am seeing a huge difference in rebloom. Usually I just wait until the first flush is done and whack off that growth. This year, since I'm babysitting everything (it's as if I never really saw these roses before), I just deadhead as I walk around checking for sawfly larvae, new growth, etc. With this approach, I'm seeing new growth and buds pushing out quickly. I'm really impressed. Btw, mine are trained horizontally along a balustrade so it is easier to reach them to deadhead.

Who knew ND could still hold such surprises?

Yes, it blooms on both old and new wood.

I love New Dawn, it's one of the big climbers can repeat well and take the shade and cold. Some of New Dawn can go back to their parent become once bloomer, I have 2 of those in my garden, they bloom on old wood only, the true New Dawn blooms on old and new wood like others have mentioned. I have 6 New Dawn now, 4 of them repeat. I just planted planted 3 by north facing wall, they repeat very well. :-)

Guess what I found yesterday? 3 New Dawn, 3 White Dawn for $9.97 each in 3 gal pots! Now I have 12! :-)

I have Awakening 1 year old and it is already over 10 ft wide despite being in part shade (or maybe because it is in shade is constantly growing toward the light). Behind the camellia tree in the photo planted at the base of the wooden trellis but reaching to nearly the end of the black trellis and extending 2 ft to left of wood trellis (Jude is on the left in front of it) .

It is nearly always blooming at the tips of new wood and I deadhead immediately.

My goodness, that's huge for a 1 yr old plant! Is yours a grafted? I have a 3 yr old band in full sun, it's 2' tall. The band was a tiny 5-6" tall with 1 cane when I received it. I think it might take 6-7 years to grow up....,,,,

No mine is own root from Heirloom. First summer it grew like a single cane going to about 5 ft straight up because I attached to the wooden trellis that way.

Most of the growth you see in photo is this year with many new basal breaks. No pruning, just dead heading. This year I learned that climbers break more laterals if they are trained more horizontal (45 degrees or less) so I just took down all the canes and practically lay them on the ground. It worked and they grew toward the sun with lots of new laterals. It looked kind of messy at times, but when they got really long I attached them to the trellis, on more of a diagonal angle which looks more tidy.

Also I think attaching them on the trellis in such a way that the tip is drooping downward also may help lateral and bloom development along the stem (apparently hormones at the flowering tip suppress flowering along the stem).

Daisy, you have the most beautiful New Dawn on this forum! I wish mine would be half as nice as yours. I wish mine could cover the tree trunks up to 14-16'.
