When does New Dawn/Dr. Van Fleet Bloom in Zone 5?
Comments (11)Hi Everybody! So sorry I haven't been back for so long - I really don't know where the times goes. Thank you all for your input. Since I last posted, I have noticed a few buds, maybe 8 (!) on the whole plant. One has opened the proper light pink. Last year I had dieback down to about 3 feet, but it grew back like gangbusters, just as yours did, Mary, but no blooms at all. This spring, there was just a little tip damage, so I assumed I would get a wonderful show, it being the fourth year since planting. Even the second year, when it actually bloomed well, it never repeated, and so I thought then that perhaps I had Dr. Van Fleet. Does DVF form buds and bloom much later than New Dawn? Would it possibly form buds gradually, or only all at once? Thanks so much for your help, Judith...See MoreGetting New Dawn to re-bloom
Comments (6)If you didn't remove the spent blooms in June, ND will have set a lot of hips (fruit). Letting these develop causes a great reduction in repeat bloom. With a climber, you don't have to be fussy about how you deadhead-- just use the hedge trimmers and whack off most of the blooms and fruit. Cut the lateral shoots (blooming spurs) back to 2 or 3 leaves, but let the long basal shoots develop without interruption. However, if your plant is 6 years old and has not repeated at all, it may have been cloned from a stem that had mutated back to the once-blooming form named Dr. Van Fleet. There is nothing to be done about that except to replace the plant. However, Dr. Van Fleet is still worth growing....See MoreWhat clematis will bloom now with New Dawn rose?
Comments (8)I have a New Dawn that does rebloom, but mine is just beginning its first flush. Clematis that are blooming simultaneously are: Type 3's: Viola Odoriba Margot Koster Hagley Hybrid Pink Fantasy Petit Faucon Betty Corning Type 2's: Kacper Prince Philip Piilu Niobe Ramona (really just ending) Blue Light Some of those mentioned are pink, which might not be a great match. I have my ND paired with Viola for the flush that's about to happen, and Blue Belle (the type 3) for what happens later. You can look up these pictures at the Hull Database on Clematis on the Web. Have fun deciding, though I recommend type 3's with a rose, as the trimming is much easier....See MoreIDing zone 4 or 5 by New Dawn performance? Anyone else with New Dawn?
Comments (27)I'm finally able to access my pictures so I'll post a few here of the roses I mentioned. Quadra in my experience is at least as thorny as ND, but the flowers last much longer. Being a semi-double, you don't notice them fading as much and I've seen clusters last a good 2 weeks without getting ratty. I'd say mine that's maybe 7 or 8 years old blooms more or less all summer, taking a break in August as most of my roses do. Here's a shot after I finally wrestled him into an arch after a few years free standing: Here's my Colette after about 3 years, making her a young climber. She's survived both polar vortex winters, so I'd say she's fully hardy in my zone 5. Lunar Mist climbs quite well along the fence for a good 10 feet or more and is usually tip hardy for me. And even though my "not RdV" doesn't repeat, my Reine des Violettes is a great statement in spring and totally tip hardy every year. It would laugh off zone 4 winters too I suspect. The "real" RdV should repeat fairly well and it's apparently a little more of a purple cast than mine, which is a good thing in my world. Hope this helps - you have many good options.
