It took me several months, but I finally sold my pick-up on Craigslist. Just before moving to Florida, I sold several other things (tools, unused dog house, canning supplies, etc.). And, I put lots of things at the curb and put it out as free - all disappeared within a reasonable time.

It seems like everyone replies if it''s free and THEN decides if they want it or not.

We have bought canning jars from Craigslist. I had the impression we were the only offers to buy in all four cases. We have bought a room size wool rug along with 2 pieces of art from the same estate advertised on Craigslist. I have bought straw from a farm 60 miles away and arranged delivery of it. I bought a set of cub chairs, and the seller kindly waited several days for me to arrange pick-up, though I did pay before the wait. All my purchases have been smooth and easy.

However, I have never successfully made a sale on Craigslist. I've listed several times and never had a single bite. In fact about an hour ago, I listed 30 classical CDs and will be surprised if anyone responds. So I've never been bothered with pesky buyers.

I have had mostly success. I have had one or two things listed that never got even one inquiry.

I have had many, many scammers. So damn irritating. DH had one that was so bad he txt back to them "send me YOUR email and I will kindly send my my full name, address, phone number, personal email, bank account number, ATM pin, social security number and anything else you may require." Then he sent, "suck an egg". hahaha I cracked up laughing.

It is "hit and/or Miss at best. And there are professional" scam artists at work here. We have a table of oldish but in good condition tools to put on there, now, and I hesitate. Maybe donating...taking tax write-off is better.

DH has been very successful clearing out the garage on Craiglist. But he had mostly tools,hobby stuff, fishing gear, old faucets etc. and things like that. Beds and soft furniture are almost impossible to sell. No one wants them due to the fear of bedbugs and other possible nasties. In many places it's actually illegal to resell a mattress.

I think Craiglist is more successful in some regions than others. Around here it is rare to see a garage or yard sale. In other parts of the country where people still do that I guess Craigslist wouldn't be as popular.

At different times, we sold 3 vehicles and a refrigerator.....

Yes, list in in Antiques at a good price. People looking there might not be the same people who would be looking under "Free".

Totally agree that selling might be less aggravation on CL. I've bought and sold on CL with success but have had my share of aggravation. Have met some very nice people and some flakes.

However, I agree with Jim. When I was decluttering I would put items out on the front sidewalk, including furniture, with a sign saying 'free/gratis' and they were always scooped up pretty quickly.

I can just imagine how happy someone might be to run across such a bed frame as you describe as they passed by and bring it home, you would truly make their day.

I use "Local to.......our community. Each person submits an application for admission to the "Local to...and must qualify as a primary resident before being able to post.

Works much smoother than CL.

I've sold a few things, and given away a lot of free stuff. When I was cleaning out Dad's house, I listed some various small pieces of furniture. I think they all sold. I had some no-shows, but it didn't matter since I was there working anyway.

We are going this morning to DMV to sell DH's old enclosed work trailer. He listed it on Saturday night, showed it to two guys on Sunday, and the second one offered him full price. I should let him do the selling!

I haven't used freecycle in a long time, but I had very good experience with giving things away with that one. Everything I gave away was small enough to fit in the trunk of my car ( one time I met people at a Home Depot parking lot to give them a music stand) or for me to carry out (art supplies, kids craft things). The only BIG item was a huge freestanding basketball hoop thing. Someone did come and disassemble it and somehow fit it in his honda civic.

Freecycle.org is the website which I believe is still active. Certainly worth a try.

We had very good luck with our yard sale, but not so good selling individual items. You would think after the Penguins won the championship someone would want to buy our beer cans. lol Oh well, next time we'll try our luck at a flea market.

My husband sells a lot on CL. He has found that if he has replies come to him as texts on his cell phone it cuts down on scammers.

Success selling higher ticket items and great success selling "man" things (i.e. Auto parts, tools, bldg material surplus). Sucess in free section. Failure trying to sell small ticket items like craft supplies, vases, plants. Must mean low demand as everybody must have a stash of that stuff.

I've sold livingroom furniture on Kijiji (CL isn't popular here). Smaller items like food processors, desk chair, kitchen items.

Freeycle I really like. I've gotten a lot of great stuff and have also passed on a lot of great stuff.

I have bought and sold successfully numerous times on CL. I only had a scammer one time and that was when I was selling a boat. I love CL.

I've switched to getting rid of things on Next Door. I like the fact that the website has checked to see if the people live where they claim to live. Since my town is so small (2,200 residents) I will often drop the stuff onto people's curbs or meet them at the town park about a mile from my house so they don't know where I live.
