Got rid of more stuff on Craigslist!

I LOVE!!! Craigslist for decluttering stuff that's got life left in it, but not worth selling, given the time it takes to field callers (Craigslist) or pack and ship (eBay). Today, I put out a Sterilite drawer unit, some magazine holders, some old pieces of software, and some children's CD's. Took pictures, posted them on Craigslist for free, and everything was gone within two hours.

I looked through my old Craigslist postings to see what I've gotten rid of in the past year, and it's really amazing. A couple of bikes, some baking pans, some garden equipment, gerbil bedding, toys, crutches, a ceiling fan, and so on. And that doesn't even include the stuff I've sold, like my old stove and microwave.

I love that I just need to put the stuff on my porch, take a picture and post it ... and poof! ... it's gone. Much easier than carting it away, and I sometimes get some really nice thank-you notes.

Anyone else do this?

That's a better idea than a Garage Sale or Hauling to Donate.

Yes, I've had a lot of success with it too. Just this summer I sold a sewing machine, pool chemicals that my DH was going to haul to the hazardous waste site after we dis-assembled our pool, the pool's ladder that I knew had more value than the re-cycler was going to give us, a go cart that my son loved when he was young and a guitar case.

But the largest and most expensive thing I ever sold on Craigslist was a 28 foot cabin cruiser (boat). I had posted at marinas far and wide but it was a Craigslist ad that got it sold in the end.

My purchases from Craigslist have all had happy endings too.

Smilax sp. are a favorite food source of birds, so you will never be free of the vines. There are 20 Smilax species in the US and 14 are native to GA. 9 of those are found state-wide or nearly so and you may find several different ones in your garden. I have found one that is an attractive plant and I grow it as an ornamental. Smilax pumila(humilis) has red berries, bronze winter foliage and no thorns, a few prickles are found sometimes near the base and has no tendrils(non-climbing). Usually grows upright for only a few feet or trails on the ground. Smilax smallii is the highest climbing species, reaching heights of more than 30 feet. It has a few prickles, but no thorns. Smilax laurifolia is the most viciously armed of the species. Good luck with eradicating them! I usually find one or two each year that has escaped detection among large Azaleas and the battle is on!

It isn't just small suppliers. I had 20 yds of 5 way topsoil delivered for a seeded lawn from a major supplier in Woodinville once. While spreading it out I picked out a lot of broken glass. Some as large as a dinner plate. I then raked it out, seeded it, and then lightly watered it. Glass showed up all over! Customer was NOT happy! I filled up two five gal. buckets and brought it back to the supplier and asked that they deliver another ten yards without glass for free so I could cover up what was already spread out. They refused. Things deteriorated into a yelling match and I was physically thrown out into the parking lot by a couple of truck drivers the dispatcher called in. I had to buy additional topsoil from another company on my own dime to complete the lawn and you can be sure it wasn't Pacific Topsoils. "I don't really like to donate to charity. I find that people are starting to feel way too good about themselves when they give relative to how much good their donations actually do. Where I live, charity has begotten dependency to an alarming extent - I live in a poor area where I see first hand that to a large extent it is doing so much more harm than good. Meanwhile I know middle class and upper class people are having orgasms of self satisfaction for giving, even when they are really benefiting themselves more by giving than they are helping anyone else. Even in developing countries, it is not always appreciated. Voices are emerging from within Africa to say that aid must be focussed on building capacity and enabling self-sufficiency. When the driving force for donation is that I have an excess of something, that's not a good enough rationale for me to donate it, although there are certainly situations where I can find the perfect recipient." We donate as much of our stuff to charities as we can. Thrift stores with charitable missions, consignment shops ditto, also large pieces like furniture and bicycles to an organization that helps woman from abusive situations and their children start new lives, veteran's organizations that have collected old but functional appliances, etc. ....I've also shopped in some of those thrift stores and consignment shops, often regularly, and I've never had the sense that my donations (excellent quality clothing, books and magazines, useful household items, records, jewelry, art, rugs, even building materials, and on and on and on) has ever done anyone any harm, much less more harm than good. How I feel about donating has nothing to do with the value of the donated items to the people buying them.

I totally agree about the people who don't bother to clean the clutter off of whatever they are trying to sell Or how about the ones trying to sell a couch with the dog laying on it. I love my dog, but would definitely shoo him off if I wanted to take a picture. This one almost made me spit my coffee out this morning. Probably more than they paid for it in the 60's. The only thing I've personally sold on CL was a 10 x 12 Karastan---not oriental---rug from my "mauve" days. It had very recently been professionlly cleaned off-site for a bit of money. I only asked, & got, $20 for it from the only person who responded. Replaced it with a deep burgundy one.

My husband brought home two abandoned aluminum beer kegs from a city park several years ago (don't ask me why), and then had no luck calling around trying to sell (or dump) them. I certainly didn't want to keep them for "garden decor" for the rest of my days, so I posted on CL two for $50. We got a quick taker for $40, thanks to me & the internet. My husband never paid me a "finder's fee" now that I think about it.

Other than that I've placed several free-bee ads for an old toaster oven, redwood garden bench, several wallpaper rolls, etc., & all, I'm sure. went to excellent homes.

I have a few things on our Craigslist right now too. Got rid of a sectional sofa and a cocktail table a couple weeks ago. They were both 'well used', so I gave them away free. Sold a huge lot of VHS tapes and a dressmaker form. We gave away a lot of leftover lumber/siding.. that sort of thing once we were done with our room addition.

I've bought a lot too... including my DD's car, living room tables, a sofa, 2 chairs, 2 buffets and a china cabinet! Just bought some dining room chairs and bar stools yesterday. DD moved out so I am redecorating the basement. I love Craigslist!

I LOVE CL!!! We just sold a boat...

Last week I got 6 bags of hen & chicks.....FREE! Much better than a yard sale!!!
