Dog sleeping in bed question
Comments (10)It sounds like the dog was smart enough to get on the bed after the alarm went off and hubby got up. What confused him was when hubby was gone and he got to spend the entire night. Needless to say, hubby doesn't want to be waked up at 4 in the morning. That's why he's objecting to the dog on the bed. So go back to the original plan. If hubby goes out of town again, don't let the dog get on the bed until the alarm actually goes off. Otherwise she'll have to spend time retraining the dog every time hubby comes back from a trip. The dog knows he has to wait for the alarm and your friend still gets her snuggle time. Don't change the rules and confuse the dog. As far as a dog on a bed. It's her bed, if she wants to pet the dog in the morning, why not?...See Morelittle dog for a house dog??? need ??
Comments (18)I agree with Brooklyn Girl...if it's possible for you to take your dog inside the house, I'm sure your dog can be trained to be "polite and well mannered" inside! Even old dogs can learn new tricks and behaviors! If you would like a smaller dog anyway, I happened to like Bichons. I have two from a rescue. This breed is darling, and they have such great personalities. They don't shed, but they DO need to be groomed and their hair (they don't have fur) cut/trimmed. They weigh between 10 to 20 lbs, with some a little lighter weight and some a little heavier. They are smart, and definitely people oriented, so should not be left alone for long periods of time, or left outside unattended. They WANT to be with you! I've noticed that my two have become good watchdogs, and I can't imagine ever being without these sparkling, expressive darlings!...See MoreHousetraining Small dogs vs. large dogs
Comments (9)This thread reminds me of when I was training my Chihuahua-mix rescue. I happened to be walking the dogs in the woods one day and I was chirping "Pee-pee OUTSIDE!", "Pee-pee OUTSIDE!" to her, when a woman walked by. She stopped and laughed and said "You gotta do what you gotta do - been there!" and walked on. In my experience, my largest dog (Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever) was the biggest dumb-dumb about house training. He Just Did Not Get It. We were heading off to a reunion at his breeder when he was about 4 months old, and I turned around in the bedroom to see him standing on the bed staring at me peeing gallons... I went on a rant for the hour drive while he sat in his crate in the back of the car. Only half-joking I told my husband that I was just about ready to tie him to a fence post and drive away. He must have been listening, because he was perfectly house-trained from that moment on. I really think it depends on the individual dog. Good luck!...See MoreDoes your dog sleep on your (or someone else's) bed?
Comments (53)Yes! Our 85 lb.lab starts his nightly routine on the bed with us, then a couple of hours later heads to his other bed on the floor or to "his" leather couch in the family room. He will then rejoin us around 5am. During the time he is off the bed, we are joined by our two cats who lay at the foot of the bed. All three provide snuggle service, heat warmers, back support and sometimes a back massage when my lab is in dreamland and gets all four paws moving. DH and I have been married 39 years and have never slept without a pet on the bed, with the exception of travel and neither of us sleeps very well....See MoreUser
