Where I live, people put signs up to let people know they'd prefer dogs not go to the bathroom on their lawn or specially landscaped area. But, as long as the owner picks it up, there's no violation.

Yes, this is what we thought too as he is cleaning up. It is pretty easy for other dogs to come and start 'pooping' on the lawn too (or urinating) to establish their territory. Either way, he always sneaks a look after he cleans up and that made us think if he was really doing the right thing or not by 'encouraging' his dog to poop. (He always 'loosens the leash' once he reaches our side of the lawn).

Dogs don't really dig pooping where other dogs poop. Some mark and some don't, so I wouldn't worry that your lawn is going to get bombed with dog excrement.

My guess is that the dog owner is aware that you don't like his dog going there and he's nervous about your reaction, and thinks you're going to confront him about it.

He's doing the right thing, but encouragement with a "please don't let your dog poop here" sign might help. That said, with many dogs, when they've got to poop, there's no way to stop it but sticking a cork in it.

As a dog owner, I try to avoid areas with signage. It might help curb the pooping.

As long as they pick it up I don't see the problem. Some dogs, especially puppies, are finicky about pooping in general, so their owners may encourage them to poop... And then of course the dogs develop routines on their walks, so you can see how that can progress into a daily occurrence.

But why are you worried about the grass between the sidewalk and the street??? Most property ends at the sidewalk :)

You could let things continue, you could out a "No poop zone" sign up, you could put a small one foot "fence" up, you could clear away the area the dog likes to go and mulch it....

Or put the "Stay off lawn! Chemical treatment" flags for a few weeks until the dog breaks the habit.

Chemical treatment signs work! I avoid lawns with them. You could put one up like one of those fake security signs ;-)

I hope most dog owners in your neighborhood pick up like this guy. It can be a problem.

As a loooooong time owner of multiple dogs at a time, it is nice when the dog has a target where he/she can comfortably and reliably poop. It makes timing your walk much easier. Some breeds of dog do not want to poop anywhere near where they live and will walk and walk (and walk) to get farther away. For the human that can be exhausting.

If anything I would try to engage the guy and thank him for picking it up. That way he will be relieved to know he's not going to get chased away.

Also it is my observation that my dogs are completely uninterested in pooping near where another dog has pooped. Both my current dogs like to gain dominance and they almost always ignore other dog's piles of poop (we walk in a green space that's fairly uninhabited by anyone but us, and we have dung beetles that quickly take care of the piles).

Well last year when my lawn was beautiful before being ravaged by fungus I'd probably tell the guy to take his dog else where or else were gonna have a big problem. Now that it looks worse for ware hey maybe some nitrogen will green it up. :(

My neighbor has a big dog, and she told me they will never allow him in anyone's yard to do his business, even though they pick up after him. Some people just have that much respect for others property. They take him to an area away from the sidewalks, and yards. I have seen other neighbors stop inbetween my house and next door where the sidewalk is, and let their dog do their business, but they pick it up. It just doesn't bother me as long as they pick it up. My other neighbor just lets hers go in my garden beds. I had to talk to her about it. I don't even allow my own dog in my beds. She now has a fence :) Just talk to your neighbors about it.

are you not responsible for maintaining that area even though you do not own it?

You are responsible for maintaining the "devil strip", but it's sometimes public/county property.

When you exercise with a dog for long distances, their little intestines get moving and grooving, and as they say, poop happens. Most times, you just don't know when and if there's another bullet in the chamber, ahem, and boom! Poop.

Dogs get in a habit, they have areas they like to go, likely just far enough away from home to "get things moving" as well as far enough to "not be pooping in their 'home'". My dog does very similar...

One of the benefits of living in the relatively pristine country is that we have insects in the soil that make quick work of animal dung. When I say relatively pristine I mean the wild animals are not dewormed with ivermectin. Dewormer medicine kills the insects that would normally decompose the dung. That's why you see cattle dung in piles on the pastures - because those animals are dewormed.
