Autumn Blaze - What is this (problem)?

Hi - I planted an AB Maple ~8 years ago in my front yard which faces south and it gets 100% sun in the Midwest. It's been growing fast & full and generally appears healthy, except that every Spring/Summer its leaves develop these granular-looking protrusions... and towards the Fall, the leaves have some holes in them. I spoke to someone at the local nursery and he attributed it to being a new transplant and suburban environmental stress. However, if that were the case, the tree is pretty established now... plus these granuals are not spread equally throughout the tree -- some limbs have a high density in some places, and other limbs less or even none. My gut says this is some pest... but looking for forum input on what it is & what can be done.

Thanks.
