Weed Killer for Bermuda Lanes

Hi,

I have about 1/2 mile of 7' wide bermuda grass (var. Sahara) lanes. I mow it at 1", and most of the year the lanes are beautiful and great for walking and bike riding. However, in April-June, I have a weed problem. The rest of the year the low cutting keeps weeds in check.

I used to apply MSMA (I know, I know) once or twice April-June, and it worked perfectly. Killed 99% of the weeds, didn't stunt the bermuda at all. When MSMA was taken off the market, I tried Pastora. It's uber expensive, and the application rate is very critical.

What is the best all around weed killer for my purpose at present? Weed types are many over 1/2 mile of lanes, as you can imagine. Ideally, I need something that kills everything but Bermuda, but I know it doesn't exist. I have a 25 gallon spray rig I pull behind my 46hp tractor, so I am flexible on application.

How are you watering the grass in the spring: When do you start watering? How often and how long?

You ride bikes on the grass? I'm not picturing this very well. You have grass that's 7 feet wide and 1/2 mile long? What for?

Where do you live?

Is there any shade on the grass?

Are the weeds primarily broadleaf like clover and dandelions? Or are they grassy weeds like crabgrass?

Cough cough you can still get MSMA. It's getting hot out and Celcius WG is about the only thing you can spray for broadleafs above 85 degrees

If you have any hesitation to use a chemical fertilizer, you can always use an organic fertilizer for the timing and wait until you are confident the bermuda is back. Don't worry about the low NPK on the organics, NPK is more or less meaningless on organics. What you want with those is protein content. Look at the directions on the herbicide label. Summertime is usually a poor time because the temps are above 85 degrees.

Hi everyone. I have found that the only conditions this wire-grass won't grow in aggresively (it would try to grow on the Moon if given the chance) is full shade, so I mulch very heavy, and regularly pull the runners that still come as I water. We never use any chemicals, so we accept that some weeds are going to happen. Once the fig tree spreads out to a nice bush it also helps to shade itself at its base and reduce weeds naturally. I've had far more trouble with weeds around the blueberries, because they don't naturally shade their base much, so we use land scape fabric and then heavy mulch (pine bark and pine needles) at the base of the blueberries. Nothing I can find tells me that this would be effective on Bermuda Grass although the 2, 4, D, and Dicamba are as effective as any other product containing the same materials. Keep in mind that most of these are classified as known carcinogens in humans, and that some studies indicate there are genetic changes in soil biota where these products are used that may indicate the potential for genetic changes in humans.

Yeah I had that happen to me a couple years ago with the over the counter weed b gone products..I never used them again and instead started buying the stuff the professionals use called Celcius..Its a little over $100 a bottle but a bottle goes a long way.(The application rate for 1,000 sq ft is alot cheaper than the bayer and weed b gon products you get at the box stores) .Celcius was designed for the heat for all the warm season grasses like bermuda, st Augustine, centipede and zoysia. But as far as your bermuda goes it will bounce back..It may take a few weeks in this heat we have here in georgia. Bermuda is the toughest grass out there.

That outrider herbicide looks promising, but $$$. Somebody else recommended it for grassy weeds. What weeds do you have?

Thanks Jake, I will look into the Outrider. I hope it isn't more expensive than Pastora. That stuff is is breathtakingly expensive. I have about 1/2 mile of lanes, and every weed and rough grass you can think of. Of course 1" mowing height kills the big weeds, but stuff like smut grass, dallis grass, black medic, buffalo grass, crab grass, etc etc require herbicide.
