working with 100 year old kitchen cabinets

I have a beautiful run of wooden cabinets original to my craftsman style home. Problem is they are basically empty boxes, no floor, no back, 1 set of drawers. Also too low and too shallow for regular size sink or a dishwasher. My idea is to raise the cabinets and move them forward - essentially keep the front facade - and then install pull out shelves, drawers, etc. And a dishwasher. I realize this would involve custom cabinetry. Has anyone done this sort of thing before? I'm interested in pros / cons / etc. And the dishwasher is non-negotiable and can't go anywhere else. Feedback please?
