Suggestions Wanted for Replacing an Exterior Glass Block Window

We purchasing a 1977 house with a glass block window (prominent on the front of the house). We want to replace the glass blocks with something contemporary and modern like?????

The glass blocks are 70% damaged............

Any ideas how to improve the exterior of the house will be appreciated.

That is going to be an interesting one to be certain. You are going to need to add some structure and bracing to an opening of that size with most residential window. Anything in a contemporary style should fit the style of the home.

This type of Curtain-wall System would look good (expensive but good).

Thanks. I may end up with some sort of alarm system anyway, so this was helpful. In the end I went with (single) sliders, which was originally at the bottom of my list, almost out of consideration. Got my ventilation, window treatments, curb appeal and there are actually many more add-on security options for sliders than hoppers or awnings. The awnings were just too pricey. Getting estimates now. Started with Home Depot's @ Home Service and got a quote of $3030 for American Craftsman six sliders and one hopper (my egress in the laundry room.) I know there's a real love 'em or hate 'em thing with HD but I did have some minor kitchen work done a while back and had an excellent installation experience. ~Jacy

Exterior glass block--nice or nasty?

I have glass block on a west wall in a half bath/shower. Been there since 1956. I'd say it looks the same as the day it was installed. Pain to paint, all the mortor between them. But that doesnt happen often. Its insulation value is about the same as double pain windows, which is a little under R-2 . Can get unconfortably warm in there when the sun is directly on it which happens here late afternoons for awhile at the beginning of summer. Would hate to have it on a west wall with full half days sun striking it. As it is I tape a length of heavy duty radiant barrier on the outside for a couple months to try to save a bit on the power bill. Bumped out shower wall, no room for shutters there & it needs something right about this time of year until the sun sets further north, then it's shaded.

I'd consider replacing the whole unit. Make sure the new window is not thicket than the glass block. A lot of glass block is 3" and most vinyl is 3.25 which will be problematic. Four 8" glass block windows would use a 16x16 vent window which is a standard size and could be had for under $40. Glass block vents also come in 2 different types,one for silicone installation and 1 for mortar . A replacement vinyl window would not the correct finning for mortar installation. I would either replace the whole unit or use the correct vent window.

Our window were the typical glass pane. My husband sprayed them white so from the outside they look like shades. Yours are obviously different and you only want to do half. Looking at your examples I think neither choice is ideal. Since you do have other natural light, I personal would close them both in. For me, glass block is not particularly pretty. Added to having half of one window on that wall. I know people like to save windows at whatever cost. One of ours was a bathroom that we added using space from the back of our garage. We couldn’t keep the window and have an efficient layout. This was an extra bathroom for our oldest daughter. She absolutely loved it not having a window!

I would use two tall windows to fill the space. Assuming that the window wall is about 16ft tall, I would split it into two units. I would make both units operable. Are those inswing our outswing casements that you currently have? Using two 7ft tall windows for instance with a structural support separating the two, would be my first choice. What is the width of the current glass wall?

See the last window in the link for Tiltco windows. I know nothing about tiltco as a company but just wanted to show you a suggested approach.
