I wished for rain and got a lot of it (with a bit of hail for a short time). Some plants didn't do well... Liege and Leif for instance:

But Flaming Flamingo triple did okay:

FFO On Neon Flamingo:

My small veggie area loved the rain: Cabbage and cucumbers:

Squash: already picked a good many squash and cucumbers.

Had a lot of blooms even though some were ruined:

The Hydrangea loved the rain:

Well, at least the daylilies will be better for the rain even if it did mess with today's flowers. Can't help but feel sorry for poor Liege and Leif, but still my pick, love that color. Love those garden shots! Seeing your veggies reminds me I need to replant my squash, it didn't come up for some reason. We've been getting rain every day for about the last week, not a lot each day, 1/4 to 1/2 inch a day. I think the next week we are supposed to be dry, & cooler with less humidity. I won't complain!

Regardless of a few bedraggled blooms, your beds amaze me! Veggies and hydrangea look wonderful.

Suzanne: Congratulations. I had to wait until my 65th for my GH, but the wait meant I could spend "their" inheritance on it. LOL! The kneewall is a great idea and will give you the opportunity to insulate both the floor and side walls and that will make a great difference in your ability to heat it for winter use later, but make sure you can drop the door to accomodate it. So before you find yourself with the need to construct a style to get in and out of your GH, call Farmtek and see if they can provide the longer vertical braces and polycarb panels you will need drop the doorframe down, so the threshold will be at ground level after the base is set up on the kneewall.

Thanks, Lucille. I wish it were my house, but it is a rental apartment that I have taken over, pretty much. The Julia is own root. The minis are but they seem okay. Black magic is not, but Morden Blush may be, I can't remember, actually. She has been in the ground 3 years, maybe four. She was bare root but I totally can't remember a graft or not. I'm not thrilled with the composters, they belong to another person in the apartment and were there before I started digging up the yard. I do my best to mask them but it's pretty hard to hide big composters in a small yard. The cars I am praying, are going to be okay. Seems like (hopefully) much of the weight of the main branch is being held up by what remains of the Dogwood and the fireplace. Hopefully. The fireplace was empty space for so long, total shade till this year. Trees were removed and fell, so it became sun space. I built it into a planter this summer. Talk about hard work! I cut all the wood to fit in the spaces around the existing rock and cement. I did my best and in is pretty tight and has not lost any soil at all. It is pretty rustic, but I built it with wood lying around and spent zero dollars in doing it. Didn't even have to buy screws. Good thing, too, cause the budget for the transformation was Zero dollars! :) There is enough drainage that it shouldn't freeze and split, hopefully, but I will be covering most of the top in the winter, I think. I planted it w/ passion flowers and various annuals this summer cause it was late in the season, but I would love to put a rose climber in there somehow. Two days ago, I was considering starting a thread to see if my newly identified Pat Austin rose could live in there. I figure she nods, so being high up like that may be pretty and work for her so we can see her blooms.

Good point, Brenda. For 30 years I gardened on a lot 75 x 150 in an Atlanta suburb. Most of the back yard was taken up by a garage. My friend said that I could grow more flowers to make a bouquet in a small space than anybody she'd ever seen. Clematis climbed crape myrtles for lack of room for a trellis. Tuberoses grew in the tomato rows in the veggie plot. Azaleas on the west end of the house had no choice but to grow straight up in the 2 foot wide bed between house and driveway. I had to cut a 'window' for the meter readers to see gas and electric meters. I could hardly wait to move south where everything grew lush and there was plenty of room. I forgot that for every plant there would be at least two weeds, and grass encroaching. I'm about to take an electric chainsaw to some overgrown shrubbery that got away from me when it was too hot to prune. I'm not regretful for moving to a bigger place, but I could use some hired help, LOL. I forgot that retirement means you might not be able to keep up. Nell

Hi Aleksandas - I know many people have very strong feelings about taking the life of any animal under ANY circumstances, and respect that. (Or course, anyone who eats meat or has a leather purse, etc., is indirectly involved in euthanizing animals.) However, the term "murder" implies killing in a criminal manner, or inhumane or barbarous manner. Under federal law, it is legal to humanely euthanize House Sparrows. They are not protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, as they are introduced, non-native invasive species who have caused significant ecological and agricultural harm. I can not emphasize enough that if bluebird landlords chose to control non-native HOSP via euthanasia, it MUST be done in a humane manner. And I know for a fact that almost all of those who do elect to euthanize do NOT relish it in any way shape or form - in fact, they find it terribly difficult and painful. I agree that it is not advisable to show children (or adults) how a house sparrow is euthanized. It's just too hard to process and understand, especially for those who have not witnessed what can happen inside a nestbox as a result of a House Sparrow attack. However, Diane did NOT do this. She is using a LIVE trap. The birds are not harmed when they go into the trap (unless the HOSP kill each other inside the trap, which sometimes happens, as they can be very aggressive.) I have heard many accounts of children and adults being devastated by opening up a box to find a headless, bloody female native bird sitting on top of her eggs or dead young. It can be pretty traumatic. But nature is cruel sometimes.... On another note... I heard of a mother who sued Disneyland when her child was "traumatized" during a behind the scenes tour by seeing Mickey Mouse changing out of his costume(the child thought he was real.) Thank yall so much. True, the plants were fairly desperate for rain. I had been watering the veggies, so a few things were well watered and I was threatening to break out the sprinkler for all. We haven't gathered any tomatoes yet, but we have quite a few on the plants including some quite large ones that just keep growing.. This clematis blooms all summer, but frequent watering (the pepper plants are right there) have made it look much better than usual:

Wow, wonderful to see blooms and veggies. Your clematis is so cute with those bell type blooms. I'm surprised more of your leaves on your plants didn't get zapped by the hail. Very odd weather patterns this year, eh?

It must came from here Kay :) We finally have the days without rain...yesterday rain early in the morning and today no rain and for the first time in a long while I saw clear blue sky !!!

Love your blooms as always Kay, and your veggies too...My tomatoes doing pretty good and I have some greens but Pepper not that great and forgot to put squash and cucumber earlier so haven't seen much action...
