Which rose to climb up this tree?

I have this raised bed and tree stump in the middle of my back yard. After much deliberation (and the discovery of baby birds inside) we've decided to leave the stump and grow a rose up and around it. I'd also love to plant around it if there's enough room. Any thoughts on what climber/rambler you'd put here? Ten year old girl included for scale. ;) My husband wants a bolder color because there's a lot of green everywhere and because it's so often grey here in Seattle (zone 8b). I've considered veilchenblau but I think I'd prefer a double flower here. I'm in love with Ash Wenesday, but it's not exactly bright. Perhaps mons. Tillier? Would love any thoughts. I am hoping to have red roses along the fence behind, but so far only have one little Tess so I'm holding that plan loosely.

Is the tree still partially alive?

It's mostly dead, but there's that one big green shoot that came up this spring.

Gayle..I am thrilled you are seeing the vigor and beauty of Clematis "Ramona"..she is so underestimated and talked about one of the wonderful Pruning group 2's IMHO. I have clematis "Rhapsody" but he doesn't seem as vigorous or floriferous as "Ramona" BUT that may be because he is in more shade..I am considering moving him..maybe someone with him located in more sun can speak differently about his attributes? I also have clematis "Crystal Fountain" which is in year two for me..she was wonderful this year..I have her container grown with a drip system to her pot..she hasn't gotten very tall for me..only about 4-5 feet tall..tho mine is in morning sun and afternoon shade.. Climbing rosa "Lady Banks" is a huge vigorous one time bloomer and I would suggest planting a pruning group 3 if I was you..Purples and blues both look fabulous with yellow and call me kinky but I love red with yellow roses too..I have climbing rosa "Teasing Georgia" companioned with "Barbara Harrington" & "Mme Julia Correvon"..two deliciously vigorous reddish pruning group 3's...Jeanne

Westerland, a dark apricot, would look beautiful on that wall. It has strong canes. I am in Texas so couldnt comment on what would be hardy in your area. Check out the Canadian roses like William Baffin, John Cabot - cant recall the rest but there are a bunch for cold climates. Griffith Buck roses were bred for cold winters. Roses Unlimited is a good source for those and many others. Brad Jalbert breeds roses in Canada - might check out his website and see what he offers. Hortico Roses in Canada has a big selection of roses, perhaps they could advise you - check out their website. You have a lovely space that would be wonderful for a bunch of roses! Climbers, then shrub, hybrid teas, floribundas, old garden roses in front of those. Lots of potential!

Quicksilver good and I would recommend it, tho it may go over 8’, mine is 6 feet but a young plant still. Not sure if spirit of freedom could be kept at 8 feet, but wow what a lovely rose and it has it all. No spray first year plants in pots here. picture from yesterday Bordeaux cityscape: healthy continuous bloomer that is not a climber but probably could reach 8feet. Mine grew to 5-6 feet on its second year before I cut it down because it was way past where I needed it to be. I bought it as 3 feet tall bush to cover the bottom of my sculpture it and now I have to fight it because I loves to grow very tall. blooms like this all the time, perfect foliage. Blooms don’t burn in full day sun. I do not have a better red.

I'm thinking that you might need to make a decision about whether you're going to let the tree regrow or keep it as a stump...

If keeping it as a stump, you might like to consider Crepuscule - its glowing apricot tones should warm and brighten a dull day, and I think it would gracefully mound itself over the stump, eventually covering it completely.

If regrowing the tree, Mme Alfred Carriere, after two or three years of settling in, should begin to shoot up into the new canopy, growing as high as there is support for her to climb on. Her big white to blush-white blooms would show up well in overcast weather, and she never balls in rain and damp.

In warm/frost-free climates, both of these are pretty much perpetual flowering, producing good blooms for up to 10 months or more of the year. In some climates/areas people have found MAC prone to mildew, so you might need to get local advice on that. For me she was completely healthy and trouble-free.
