Which are your non-climbing roses you trained to climb?

Hi y’all! I have a space by my driveway where I have Sally Holmes growing. Her disease resistance is impeccable! However, her petals can’t stand up to the full west afternoon sun. They also blow fast and don’t self-clean. Im considering moving her to a different location and replacing with a non-climber trained as a climber. I would prefer something with excellent disease resistance, fragrance, self-cleaning with a max height of 8’. Suggestions welcome! I’m not color picky. Reblooming preferred. Thank you!

Quicksilver good and I would recommend it, tho it may go over 8’, mine is 6 feet but a young plant still.

Not sure if spirit of freedom could be kept at 8 feet, but wow what a lovely rose and it has it all. No spray first year plants in pots here.

Bordeaux cityscape: healthy continuous bloomer that is not a climber but probably could reach 8feet. Mine grew to 5-6 feet on its second year before I cut it down because it was way past where I needed it to be. I bought it as 3 feet tall bush to cover the bottom of my sculpture it and now I have to fight it because I loves to grow very tall.

blooms like this all the time, perfect foliage. Blooms don’t burn in full day sun. I do not have a better red.

Too bad Rainy Blue isn't in the US. Hmf says Rainy Blue only gets to 5ft? It looks taller from the photos lol. It looks like some of Rainy Blue's blooms might be somewhat quartered, so Quick Silver might be a good substitute here but Quick Silver is more lavender than blue. Rainy Blue has more of Poseidon's coloring but Poseidon isn't quartered but more waterlily like. Poseidon is also normally a tall shrub except mine which seems to have morphed into a climber.

Sheryl, what you can do with roses like the last picture is just wait till one of those clusters stops blooming and cut the whole cluster back further down on the stem. The rose is big enough that a little haircut like that won't bother it at all, and that would involve no more than a dozen pruning cuts for the blooms there. You do want to deadhead when possible because it signals the rose to keep putting out more blooms, assuming it's a repeat bloomer. Cynthia

Lala - the pink rose you circled in the pic is 'Climbing American Beauty' (which is a seedling, NOT a sport of 'American Beauty', and not related to 'Miss American Beauty'. Cl American Beauty (1909) is once blooming, but it blooms very prolifically for a month or so, and then there is scattered bloom for more months on new growth. HMF says it is hardy to zone 5, as it is a Wichurana hybrid. Vaporvac - in Elaine's first pic, the purple rose is Kim Rupert's 'Lauren', and the peach colored rose is Peach Drift (this one is a tree rose which Lauren is eating!). Can you train climbing roses to grow horizontally?

I'm 'late to the party' on this topic..... About 10 years ago we swagged (grew horizontally by tying it to chains) New Dawn in/on our south alley gate and arbour. As others have commented, growing horizontally produces copious lateral stems and buds - I think the lateral stems should be kept to a a few inches long, but we were too lazy to do that :-) Initially, New Dawn was very 'clean' and blacksprt wasn't an issue. Over several years it started getting some blackspot. We never sprayed though. New Dawn grows vigorously and has wicked thorns! It was starting to get dangerous to walk down the alley and there wasn't much room left on the swag chains - so we removed the roses and replaced then with (safer!) clematises! So, there's no question that the rose will do well grown horizontally, but be prepared to control/manage the growth! Some pictures: The rose is pale pink but the color is 'washed out' in some of the pictures below.... New Dawn: Looking up the alley to the arbour, gate and swags June 23 2010: Buds on lateral growths in early June: Horizontal growth in bloom: DH eliminated New Dawn July 2010 - note the rose gauntlets and eye protection! He should have been wearing a shirt, although the day was very hot.... Blood was shed....!

Yes forgot to mention Mme Anisette and Pomponella. They both can climb here. Mary Rose and Queen of Sweden also can climb. Actually any of the ”medium or larger” Austin’s can climb in our warm area easily to 8 feet.

I think I need to grow Bordeaux Cityscape! Dianela, what a stupendous rose that you can get this kind of a show routinely in August. And it's a red that can take the sun. And is just sumptuous in its blooms. Diane

Dark Desire is not a climber. It is super tall for me and it bloomed only on the ends. However, by chance one time one of the canes leaned over in a very heavy wind. I did not get around to staking it up and DD ended putting out laterals.... so I consider it a good climber. However, it would have to be the climber that you peg, I do not think it would make a good candidate to wrap the canes around something because the canes are stiff..... though you might catch them as basal breaks to wrap when they are more flexible.

It is very healthy and vigorous, though it has quite thorny, but has a nice strong scent.

Diane Bordeaux is certainly amazing, I would recommend it to anyone. If she was any shade of pink or peach it would be the ideal rose. This picture however was from earlier and not right now. Right now it is full of spent blooms after 6 inches of rain and lots of winds from all the storms we have been having.

Poor Princess Margareta behind my sculpture would not be one I would record to anyone with black spot pressure, but I love the blooms.
