Cast Iron vs Acrylic Tub- pros and cons?
Comments (6)We recently remodeled our bathroom and installed the Kohler Devonshire Acrylic Tub. I originally thought I wanted a cast iron tub but it was cost prohibitive when looking at deeper depths. I am more than pleased with the look and finish on our tub. Kohler recommends cleaning with only liquid dish soap such as Dawn which is what I have been using and it looks great. If your daughters are bathers as my daughter and I am it is well worth the extra dollars spent for a deeper tub and increase in water usage....I think it was a small price to pay for many years of great bubble baths....The only inconvenience with the deeper depth is cleaning the tub and stretching over the deeper sides. Sometimes I actually get in the tub to clean it, but still loving it....See MoreScratch on New Cast Iron tub
Comments (9)Dan, that's a tough call. The epoxy does last a bit longer, as live_wire_oak said, but the etching involves wrecking an even bigger area to create tooth for it to grab to, so it looks a million times worse when it fails. Another problem is that if it begins to leak before it chunks out, it's holding water in there, which is going to make problems when it starts getting ready to rust. The painty-type fixes don't make anything worse, but I've also seen them fail the very first time the tub is used after the cure period, sometimes. It's just all not good. We eventually opted to keep painting, but it wasn't in any way a good solution. I'd definitely give the manufacturer a call and see what their best suggestion is. Maybe there's some new miracle product we don't know about. I hope....See MoreMy new 'cast iron' Toto tub sounds like a steel tub
Comments (4)When we installed our Toto cast iron tubs (1525's), DH "wrapped" as much insulation around them as he could, while the walls behind/around them were still open. Someone here mentioned doing that. We are very, very happy with our tubs, BTW. If we ever move/have to re-do bathrooms, we'd use Toto cast iron tubs again (maybe longer ones if space allows)....See MoreKohler Cast Iron Tubs? Acrylic Tub? Americast?
Comments (13)My acrylic Bain Ultra air tub was set in a bed of mud with a piece of think plastic between the mud and tub. This was done for the ease of removing the tub if ever the need arises. It's as solid feeling on the bottom as my husband's Kohler cast iron tub. As for cleaning, that's a different story. You're not supposed to use anything abrasive on acrylic. Believe it or not, Scrubbing Bubbles is considered abrasive :( That's been my go to tub cleaner for years. To clean my acrylic tub RIGHT, I use Gel Gloss. It's a pain (literally!). You spray it on, let it sit, buff it and let it dry and then wipe the residue. When I'm in a pinch for time or physically limited, I will use Scrubbing Bubbles. There are very few non abrasive cleaners out there. One Bain Ultra suggested was Lemon scent Lysol. NOTHING works better than Scrubbing Bubbles!...See MoreKarenseb
