It's June!
Today is the day I realise I really should finish up my garden projects before it gets too hot!
Might go out and plant some roses that I've had it pots for a while this morning.
NOID rose my grandmother planted. In the morning and evening it smells like ashtray. But in the heat it smells like cinnamon gum.
My lavender rose put out a very pink, and deformed bud. But oh my gosh. It's the most fragrant I've ever smelled it!
A native bee visiting my Angel face rose.
Rose Buds everywhere.
A dragon fly has been visiting my ponds.

7 years agoI've decided my potato vine is fragrant. I still can't smell anything close to the flower but that marshmallow scent only appears when this starts blooming. It's light and elusive. I love how the buds and flowers emerge in a fractal.
It's really starting to fill in this year!
My Kaffir lime with it's delightfully scented leaves.
This is somehow blooming despite it's steady decline.
And my pink Jasmine is still putting out the odd cluster of blooms.
I can't wait to see what you guys have blooming.

It's June! How is your build progressing?
Comments (58)Our neighbor loaned out her camera, but she found another one, so we got some new pix, yesterday. This picture really shows the Dutch gable and how the shakes will flare over the stone: Boy, are we happy with how the red dirt "complements" the shakes: (ggg) This picture is from the neighbor's property. As it was going up, they were a little concerned that our house looked too large & close. They also weren't that sure about the white trim. Comments (68)Athensmomof3, Our porch floor to ceiling height is about 10'4". The bottom of our lantern is roughly 7'2" above the porch floor. I say roughly because I was standing out there with the tape measure myself. There may be a half inch variance here or there but that's pretty darned close. We do have a small threshold up to the door. But that should help. Let me know if you need anything else. I drive around our neighborhood and looked at the houses with gas lanterns and liked the ones best when they fell the way ours does. Some were hung higher but I never saw any hung lower. Comments (99)We have finally been making some great progress!!! Right now we are working through interior trim, and the exterior is getting closer to complete. Stone is done and is having the grout done! Hope to be starting the finishing coats of stucco next week!!! Then we can move on and pour our stamped concrete pool decking- as well as the stamped turn around by the garages! We are hoping to be in by the first or second week of August even though our contract with our builder says July 29th move in date (yes it was in writing- silly on his part.) Side note- We are planting our 500 grape vines on Sunday! We also got offered a Co-Op for a local winery. We are considering it!! :-) Front stone going on! (dont have a finished picture of the porch yet sorry :-( ) Garage doors after install! Working on grout on the stone on the back of the house!! Covered porch framing finally finished- cant wait for them to come back and case the columns on the back porch! We decided to do a cedar tongue and grove stained porch ceiling on the front and back porches. :-) Grout complete on the carriage garage. We did a dark charcoal and I think it looks amazing! Pool ready for the hot tub and stone on the block wall for the hot tub and ready for the stamped concrete to be poured! Cabinets going in! Love the detailing on the hood! Espresso stained Island- the front will have espresso stained wainscoting with an 18 inch over hang and corbels /posts Entry way ceiling painted! Wainscoting in the upstairs hallway going in! Can't wait to see it painted- our trim is SW Creamy! Tray ceilings in the hallway with the crown in! (dont mind the miss matched doors- some of ours were not complete yet and they sent a filler to set the door! and it drives me nuts!) Site built steps started going in! Only the basement has been done so far! Crown going in the bedrooms! Everybody's homes look fantastic!!!! Comments (339)Thanks so much for the warm welcome :) it's such an exciting process! We also had our first home built from the ground up but it was a semi-detached (1600 sq ft). We loved the process so much, we did it again for our second home (single family home, 2739 sq ft). I can't wait to have more space! 7 years agoLuckily black spot and Japanese beetles aren't a thing here. We have other rose issues lol.
Here's what most of those buds look like today.
My cactus bloomed. Lovely intense fragrance at night. Bubblegum Jasmine?Sadly only lasts for a day or two.
My... Duranta? I think that's what it's called.Sweet vanilla type fragrance.
Hopefully I'll have roses open soon that are used to the heat.macranthos

The brunfelsia is also open and quite nice... The lilies are almost starting too! And the Haemanthus which has a lovely fresh scent if you're willing to risk getting pollinated while sniffing.

It's so big! I didn't realise how small my Dauben really is until the bloom opened.
I wouldn't call the fragrance cinnamon, nor pungent. I find it really pleasant. Sweet, but almost medicinal.
Like candied anise, or a really sweet rootbeer.
Here you can see the size difference between my Dauben's leaves and my Texas Shell Pink.
My Dwarf Sag bloomed. I took a sniff. Smells like daisies. Not my favourite.
Cute though. You can see a second bud on Texas Shell Pink.
My Water Poppy bloomed. Not fragrant but cute.

The main pest beetles I have to deal with are the spotted cucumber beetles who love to eat my flowers, especially my brug blooms. :(
The 'Double Belle of India' jasmine finally threw a bloom with multiple layers of petals. Most blooms come out with 2 layers or so.

Lonicera hildebrandiana actually. The scent is similar to ordinary japanese honeysuckle but lighter.

And so many varieties of sambac Jasmine you guys have! I'm quite jealous.
That Panama Pacific is gorgeous.
I forgot to update you guys on my first night blooming water lily flower.
The second night it looked like this. I don't know why.
Then the petals went back up the next night. And it slowly turned more pink.
Then the flower lasted 6 days. Which blew my mind. My Dauben lasts for 3, maybe 4 days.
Here's a pond shot.
Do any of you remember that lotus seed I sprouted from one of those florist pods? It's got lots of roots, 2 leaves, and two more on the way.
My sambac is finally starting to bloom.
My Mystery gardenia is blooming. I forgot to take a picture of the open bloom before I took it inside.
And this little guy was on sale for $5 so I picked him up.

Somehow them not lasting as long as the first makes me feel better.
From this morning.
Both are open at the same time for an hour each morning before the night blooming one closes.
I honestly don't remember which gardenia this is... Chuck Hayes maybe.

7 years agoLooks a lot like chuck Hayes to me, tho mine died... Too cold and wet maybe. Frostproof does way better in Portland than any of the others.
My dianthus noeanus petraeus has started. It's wafting across the deck and is lovely.
