Bedroom chair -- do you use yours?
Comments (30)I agree, a palm would probably look nice ... if someone else lived here! We aren't "plants" people. (I tend to kill them. Unintentionally, of course.) Plus, even if we were, that room is really pretty dark most of the time. I'd have to find a plant that prefers caves over light. And then it would get dusty, and then I would hate it, and then it would die. Bye-bye, plant. "Fake" would be even worse. DH would make fun of it incessently and it would get depressed and suicidal. Not the vibe I want in my MBR. :-) No, I think a chair or perhaps the leaning ladder is the way to go. But gk5040, you're right, there's not that much room so the chair has to be big enough but not too big. I remember long ago when my grandmother came to see my first apartment. She could not BELIEVE I didn't have a chair in my bedroom. "Where do you sit?" was her question. She could not fathom a bedroom without a chair. Maybe if it was on MY side I'd be inspired to actually go in there and sit. But there's not enough room over there for anything more than a dining room type chair. Must continue to haunt craigslist!...See MoreDo you try to protect your furniture against the sun?
Comments (27)dedtired, my furniture at one time, was all cherry, mahogany and rosewood and I experienced the same as you. I realized how much it had faded when I put the leaf in the table and on the LR tables, I had one that hardly got any sun exposure and one that was in east morning sun. When I rearranged the room, I saw just how faded the cherry table that sat in the sunlight was. Had I known how quickly that would happen (something my mother never told me but she had so many shade trees and an overhang porch that perhaps that was not a problem), I would have taken better care to protect the furniture. Some of that rosewood was quite old and had been my grandmother's (a little guilt trip). I used a Scott's Liquid Gold in the color nearest to my furniture as a "remedy" sotaspeak. I only put it on the table and not the leaf and applied more and more coats on the DR table. It really did help. I did that on the drop-leaf table that was discolored so much it did not match the other. I think the heavy draperies that we had growing up, the shade oaks and the large overhang porch protected the furniture I got from my family. I did not have that in a new suburban house where the contractor had plowed trees away and by the time trees were large enough to help, the furniture was discolored. Comments (38)We put an upholstered leather (and chrome) bench in our recently "renovated" master bedroom (pics to post someday!). I got it so we'd have a spot to sit while putting on our socks, shoes.... DH would always sit on our just-made bed (made-up by me, of course!) while tying his shoes, right on the nicely fluffed up bed pillows, and then walk away leaving them all smushed! Also, the spot where we have it just seemed to call for a bench! :) We don't use it for sitting and hanging out, except perhaps if one of us just sits down for a few minutes to chat while the other one is getting ready to go out or whatever. Surprisingly, neither of our cats has claimed it as her own!!! They both pretty much ignore it for some reason....See MoreDo you purchase protection insurance on appliances etc?
Comments (20)Extended warranties are essentially just a form of gambling. The warranty purchaser is betting that the product will need more repairs than the warranty costs, while the company selling the warranty is betting it won't. Guess who's got the data on their side? That doesn't mean these warranties don't pay off sometimes. So does casino gambling. But the business model of both casinos and extended warranty companies is to be sure to take in plenty more than they pay out. That situation is not in the best interest of the consumer. Also, Kathy's post above illustrates one thing you can do to keep appliance repairs to a minimum: Don't buy appliances with excessive amounts of electronics in them. Touch-screen refrigerators and washing machines, for example. These have a far higher failure rate than simpler appliances that have electro-mechanical controls rather than computer motherboards. Appliances have abundant heat, moisture and vibration. These are the worst enemies of electronics, and it means the $2500 refrigerator in all likelihood won't last as long as the $500 one.
