Comments (26)One easy trick I stumbled upon was to build the simple teepee with wire or tomato cages or anything you have on hand and then drape a tarp (plastic or fabricc)over the teepee and extend it out in all directions away from the plant. If you have bushes or small trees in a row and really big tarp just drape it up and over what you can and then lay the rest of it flat against the ground. The soil will give off heat at night and the heat will collect in the tents made by the small trees. There can still be some frost damage where the leaves touch the plastic but it is amazing how much green you can save....See MoreWhat do you do to protect against cold?
Comments (33)Olya The frustrating part in my location is that I really only need protection for 3 weeks tops. And even that breaks down into hours even on the coldest days. The Sh is located attached to the house on the SE corner. During winter the sun shines full blast from dawn to around 1 .lol The heat gain is incredible if it's a "normal" cold front. Dead calm ,clear skies 3 days long . So my best option has been to leave it open ,heat only during the coldest hours. If I try to block the heat I have a worse problem the next day usually. One of the best all around coverings I've tried is diffusing lexan. Provides the shade, wind and rain protection, can be left in place permanently Now for the long term bad parts lol. Grew mold and mildew when wet, algae, which over time blocked light Required almost yearly cleaning. Required fans on year around basis. Cheap stuff crazed quickly ,expensive stuff took longer.lol Generally my conclusion was that it was more harmful than helpful on a year around basis. So when I repaired hurricane damage I replaced with vinyl lattice, 1/4 inch hardware cloth(I keep birds free ) I grow vines and various air plants on the roof and two trees are allowed to grow through for shade. pruned back during winter. Generally this has been the cheapest most effective method for me but has problems lol. If you can cover without overheating in your area that would be fantastic!!. I often wished I lived in either a really tropical location or cooler one so that I could use regular coverings lol. A real year around GH would be great!! gary...See MoreWhat are you all doing to protect your veggie gardens from deer?
Comments (5)Welded Wire Fence from Home Depot. I like the 5' tall stuff, 50 feet cost about $45 recently. With your layout, you could probably just make a circle for each bed. I just bend some of the edge wires back inside the circle to hook into the other side of the loop. The fencing will last many years. I have found the green coated stuff to come apart much faster than the plain. Even around a fair sized garden, deer won't usually jump it if there's no clear place to land. After several years deer did jump a couple of my fences last year so I tied bamboo poles on to the fence at intervals and ran wire around at 8'. I have tried heavy T posts with wire run between them and bamboo poles at close intervals, that worked a couple of years then deer started getting through it. For deer repellents, which I consider not really worth bothering with compared to something permanent, I have blended egg and cayenne pepper in water and dribbled it on plants with a dish detergent bottle, and also deer don't like blood meal sprinkled on things... but would you want it on your lettuce....See MoreI'm curious. What do you do to protect you and yours?
Comments (66)I've been the victim of three crimes - all preventable. 1.) Being assaulted by a man while walking with a friend down a dark street to an unlit parking lot after Fiesta in San Antonio around 2am. I was 19 and clueless. We were more mentally harmed than physically. 2.) My brand new '98 Thunderbird was broken into while parked on the street in front of my house. It was locked but I should have parked in the driveway and not under the shadow of a large tree to the side of the house. 3.) My sister and I were at a salon in a mall and I was getting my hair cut while she was waiting. A guy with a backpack sat next to her and secretly fished her wallet out of her purse. I had just paid her a few hundred dollars because she was going to stay with me for the summer, babysitting my son. Of course her purse was on the floor, totally laid open with her wallet in plain site. The things I do to keep myself safe: -keep all doors locked all the time - security system - keep lights on in the house (even at night) and have motion sensor flood lights on the exterior - big dog who is encouraged to bark - TV stays on when not at home - reporting suspicious activity - being aware of my surroundings and not putting myself in precarious situations...See Moreschicksal
