Duchesse de Brabant or Jacques Cartier?
Comments (11)Jacques Cartier & D de Brabant both do well here in coastal southern CA (I'm south of Jeri near Venice Beach). My garden is a bit too coastal for the Duchesse at times. Jacque Cartier is best in spring when it's cooler. It slows down in the hotter later portio of summer. But I still get several bloom cycles over 10 months. It is the most heat tolerant Portland or Hybrid Perpetual kind of rose I've grown. I would think that Teas would do pretty well for you given your location as long as they don't mildew. My garden isn't quite hot enough for them except in the fall....See MoreDuchesse de brabant must be moved, suggestions please?
Comments (7)Hi merry: I moved 2 roses last year, and 7 roses this year (William Shakespeare 2000, Nahema, Crown Princess Mag., Paul Neyron, Jacques Cartier, Eglantyne, and Pat Austin). I moved Eglantyne last week in 90 degrees heat. I did it at 8 o'clock evening time. I prepared the new hole in advance, then dug Eglantype up. I put it on a garbage lid, and threw water over the rootball immediately. Then I drag the garbage lid across the lawn to the new hole. None of its leaves got droopy. I moved Pat Austin (2nd year bush and big) a few days ago. Unfortunately I didn't have the new hole ready. I dug Pat up, and plunged her into a bucket of water, then spent time digging the new hole. The upper branches are droopy, but the lower ones are perky. I cut off the upper branches, and 3/4 of the leaves are still perky. I moved Pat around 8 o'clock evening time, since day time temp. was over 100. From what I researched on moving plants, it's best to water it the day before, but NOT RIGHT BEFORE MOVING. You want the rootball to be slighty moist, but NOT SOAKING wet, which the soil crumbles and roots get snapped off. Eglantyne was slightly moist, but mostly dry when I dug up. Pat Austin was soaking wet, and lost most of its hairy roots. In the past I moved 3 huge Knock-outs bush by watering it right before moving - bad mistake, all 3 lost roots, lost all their leaves and took at least 2 months of daily watering to sprout new leaves....See MoreDuchesse de Brabant: Evaluation and Photos
Comments (9)Lilyfinch, thanks for your kind words and well-wishes. I'm hoping to be out of the hospital soon, to finish mending at home with the hope of supervising some garden work until I'm healed enough to resume myself. Ingrid, I got Duchesse de Brabant as a one-gallon from Chamblees. Your many posts inspired the purchase, and I'm delighted to have this rose, even if it only does bloom during cooler weather. I'm growing it in conditions opposite yours: only a few hours of the strongest afternoon sun, so I'm impressed it does as well as it does. Regarding the yucky stuff, I became a beached whale after a minor injury that incapacitated me. When I couldn't get an expedited appointment to take care of the injury, I floundered trying to take care of myself, and ended up with multiple fractures, torn ligaments in several areas, including one torn all the way off, three stage three decubitus ulcers, and a suspected DVT. So here am, still hospitalized, getting stabbed in the belly with injections every night, after almost three months, when I should have been up and running in a few days. Thank God I'm in the hands of exceptional and caring physicians, nurses, and therapists -- some of them friends, former classmates, and clients. The hospital is set in a lovely and serene garden, which makes me yearn to get back to my own gardens all the more --- SOON! And I'll have roses waiting to be planted when I get there! Sammy, I'll have to check out Miss Caroline. But I agree -- DdB is a very pretty rose and I'm so glad I discovered this one thru Ingrid and the forum....See MoreDuchesse De Brabant
Comments (25)Thanks for the lovely compliments, Jin and Comtesse! Sorry about jumping into your thread without mentioning how lovely your Duchesse de Brabant is, Caflowerluver. Jin, yours is looking fabulous too. It’s grown so much, and is blooming like gang busters! I had AT&T here all afternoon yesterday, installing my Direct TV. They sent over another man, who was “here to go over my plan” with me. He managed to talk me into switching my wireless phone over over. I was very hesitant, but he pretty much had me when he said the new IPhone XR had a way better camera and had 4 times the storage capacity as my current phone. I’m always filling my phone with rose and flower pictures. lol I also managed to get him to agree to set everything up on the new phone, and make sure I was comfortable with it before I agreed. As soon as I had it in my hands, I insisted on posting a picture to the forum to see if it worked properly. Caflowerluver, your ‘Duchesse de Brabant’ post was the first one I could find that I knew I had a recent, appropriate picture for, in my photo library. I quickly posted the picture, but didn’t have time to write much else, with him looking over my shoulder. She’s been a great bloomer for me, in spite of a powdery mildew problem. I would have planted her in some afternoon shade, had I known she’d appreciate it. Nevertheless, she’s lovely, and I wouldn’t be without her. Lisa...See Morefig_insanity Z7b E TN
